EDIT:
The baby didn't make it. At 2am this morning, I burried the little guy in the back yard, wrapped in the only thing the vets gave him. A green washcloth. When I found him, his sibling was laying nearly on top of him as if trying to keep him warm and protect him. The only comfort is that he is no longer in any pain, and as sad as i am, I'm also relieved. It was hard watching him suffer and still be unable to do anything about it. I just wish I knew how he got that cut, because everyone says it was too clean to have been momma cat, and that someone did this to him.
No. the chick I talked to about it asked the vet for me, and the vet said not to do anything like that. So, i've only rinsed it with water.
Do you have YIM?

Renee' tipped me off about this discussion...hope you won't mind my input here. This kitten needs immediate vet care! Do not continue to rinse with water (depending on where you are, well water vs city water and all it's chemicals) you may be doing more harm than good...if you must rinse get distilled or purified water...you could use a triple-antibiotic ointment to keep the wound safe, you will have to isolate the kitten to prevent momma from ingesting the ointment....but most importantly VET ASAP it looks like it warrants stitches. Without proper treatment, you could more than likely lose the kitten to sepsis.
*nods* yeah, I'm trying to apply right now for money help. I'll stop rinsing though, and, I'll try and get my brother to pick up some ointment on his way home. As for the vet. I want to, and I've tried. but no one will take him until i have the money for them to look at him. I've been freaking out about that since I saw the wound. I just hope these people move fast with the donations.
What is Sepsis?

Sepsis is what happens when the body becomes overwhelmed with infection, and with an untreated open wound you are prime for infection to get in, since most people don't have sterile environments (handeling without gloves, using non-sterile towels to wipe or wrap)....when infection runs rampant through the body you can actually slip into a state of shock, which in young animals can be fatal quickly.

I am not comfortable leaving a wound like this open, its in a really bad spot to get dirty easily...momma cat will try to clean it too. But if you do choose to use a triple antibiotic ointment you may have to get milk replacement as well to keep the kitten going without momma for the time being.
