Whenever I see a stray a wanna take them all home and keep them but I know I cant. So I figured that I would start up a shelter in my town because there isn't one. When ever you see a stray how do you feel?

I totally commend you on starting a shelter. I Pray it is a no kill shelter. Do you know how to do this, by getting government grants 501c etc? Please apply for several grants from differant sources. You probably do or you wouldn't start one up. Also, extra money by doing fund raisers and recruting Volunteers as well as paid staff? You are an amazing Angel for the pets who can't help themselves. I have been in rescue over 35 years and it is a never ending but totally rewarding line of work. The education you get alone is worth it's weight in gold as well as working with all the Vets and learning soo much. God bless you, Hugs, bobbie

The shelter that I wanna start up is to help and save the homeless animals. Never ever to kill!!!!! I am the type of person who wants to cry every time I see a dog or cat walking on the streets or searching through garbage for something to eat, and it just breaks my heart. So if I can start this shelter I would love to. First I just gotta find out how. I'm just a 20 year old girl tring to rescue the homeless animals. I could use any advice on how to get started....

I am always stopping to check on animals that I find wandering or seeming lost. I have rescued a few but not nearly as many as some of the amazing people in this community. On that note, this is a really AWESOME community! There are SO many people here who do shelter and rescue work that I am sure that mentors will come out to help you. Just keep the faith and work hard to achieve your dream. Perhaps run an ad in your local paper or on Craigslist in your area and ask for people who have shelter experience to help you. Also ask for an Attorney to donate services to help with the non profit status and filing with your State. Animal lovers will jump in and help. Best of luck to you!

Thank you for the advice!! I never thought about running an ad in the paper. I write alot so this is a great idea. Now my mind is so full of stuff that I could run in the paper that I am sure that I will be able to get this shelter up and running very soon!!! Does anybody think that its possable for a young person such as myself to want to do something so big, like what im tring to do, and acomplish it?

It can be accomplished. You will need LOTS of experienced help one reason is your young age. Please go to a local shelter and see what equipment is needed as well as ask for an appointment to discuss a Personal appointment with the Person in charge. Also rescue groups can help. I never needed a lawyer to help as each State has Grant funds to help. The trickey part, is filling out the paper work properly. This is a Huge undertaking and you Need seasoned Volunteers in your corner. Budgets, set up for full time staff as well as several Vets who will do spay/neuter, medical etc for free that they write off and get a tax break annualy for. Then there are Creative fund raisers, contacts for food etc. The list goes on. You NEED help. Bobbie

I do agree that I need LOTS of help. I was talking to my fiance the other day and he as well said that I would need help. The paper work is something I will really need help with. Im not good with it sometimes so..... I will be looking around for help. Im thinking about posting a webpage for help to. What do you think????

I feel so bad for them! Just like you, I want to take them all home, but can't! Every time I try to think of what I can do and try it. Come to think of it, I haven't really seen a stray since that Corgi. Huh. Well, bye! -Shell

Before I moved out of my parents, I use to bring home strays all the time. We lived in the country and had lots of land. So you can just imagine all the animals we had. When I met my fiance and moved in with him two years later, things changed. There's no more bringing home the sweet kitty cat or the dog who looks at you with those big sad eyes, begging for you to take him home. SOOOOO, I am gonna try hard for this shelter and maybe one day there wont be anymore animals on the streets.... ( My fingers are crossed)

My entire brood are all strays - except 1 so you see where I stand on this.

Kudo's on the shelter - that is my goal someday - but sadly it's going to be long in coming (unless I win a lottery)

It is insane to say that the round-ups are not working if you yourself have seen that the horses are healthy and happy out there. That is the point of the roundups. A mare can have one foal per year and each foal can begin having a foal per year at…
