ok i dont know if summer is the time when animals are supposed to abandon their babes but, i was walking to the library and i saw a two baby birds, so i left them their since they were over by a tree in the grass, when i got back, they were in the road, i didn't want two dead corpses on my mind, so i brought them inside and dug up some worms, and of course no one is open to take them, the conservation center said they were open mon-fri except for weekends and goverment holidays, apparently animals don't live on weekends and holidays, what should i do, my mom doesn't think i should have even took them, and my cousin thinks on tuesday i should call back the consevation center.

i had to crush it up, and no they can't fly, they jump around though, me and my cousin named them flapjack and chowder, i know it's not good to get attached but, i thought i should call them something other than bird 1 and 2.

a neighbor kid saw the birds fall out when the wind picked up, i called all the animal places in town, the only real person i got said they don't deal with birds, and to call the conservation center, but of course no one is open on weekends, or tomarrow for that matter.

well, animal control came and picked them up today, unforunetly chowder (the weaker one) died about an hour before they came, i couldn't believe it, he just stopped moving, and the woman from animal control just grabbed him by the leg in two fingers, and flapjack kept biteing her, but hopefully they can save flapjack, and beth9289, no i didn't toch them, i used some latex gloves, and i couldn't take them to the vet, they were closed, and the only one that was open, wouldn't take them.

i feel so sad that chowder died, if he only lived for an hour more, when the lady picked up flapjack, he looked up at me and opend his mouth, i almost cried, and i thought they had to wear gloves, bare handed she grabed them both, and she was so casual about it, i know i shouldn't have gotten attached but i still miss them.

Hi Sissy,
It's that time of year when young birds are fledging everywhere. When young birds fledge, they do not have full feathers and only limited flight skills. The parents will be close by, coaching, watching, guarding, and feeding the youngsters for another week or two as they get stronger and develop full flight skills and feathers. Some will make it, some will not. The weaker ones will die off and the strongest will make it. That is only nature ensuring survival of the fittest. The photos look like youngsters that have very recently left the nest, but were probably supervised by parents. Moving them from the road was a good call, but next time, I would suggest putting them in a tree or in a high bush.

We just had bunches of baby robins leave their nests, and one took off in the opposite direction - frightened by our sudden appearance. The parents did not notice it as they were preoccupied with my husband's presence. I went and gathered the little fledgling and brought it back to the vicinity of the parents. They immediately took over and coached it to fly (wobbly fly) into a tree. Touching them will not deter a determined protective parent. Since then, I've seen these babies bopping around after the parents, begging for food, and learning life skills. I also do not walk my cats at this time, as these young birds are ill-equipped to know what a cat is, and my mighty hunter Piccolo, even though he is on a leash, can catch them quickly. Like you, I would love to save them all. But wild birds rarely do well in captivity.
Thank you for sharing your story.
Tracy.
