How is boiling lobsters not counted as animal cruelty?

These fascinating creatures are cut and boiled alive and served as food to humans.
Merchants will try to justify boiling lobsters alive by explaining that their nervous systems aren't developed enough to feel pain. While being boiled alive, you can notice lobsters throwing their bodies around, scraping the pan, desperately trying to escape.
However some studies have proved that Lobsters do have a sophisticated nervous system

Of course there are studies which say Lobsters dont feel the pain.
But is this true?

If anyone reads this post:

Having originated in New England myself, I must say, unashamedly, that I LOVE lobster. So tasty. I love everything except the tamale.

And what family doesn't do lobster races on the kitchen floor before they go into the pot? For real.

Isn't the "screaming" you hear just the sound of the steam escaping from the shell?

Who knows- maybe in a million years, the lobsters will be bigger than humans and they'll boil us alive-- but in a million years, I and everyone else on this Web board will be dead & gone, so whoop dee doo.

I never liked to see lobsters being boiled alive. This happens a lot....KFC does that to their chickens. I hate seafood, so I don't contribute to it. Growing up in Florida and hating seafood, go figure

man, i bloody wish.
humankind are the most destructive filth nature has ever invented, and if alien invaders landed tomorrow and decided to boil us alive as payback for us lording it over our animals, i for one wud be happy.
ok, a few good people wud be sacrificed also but at least the human race wud get its just deserts (lets be honest here, most people are compassionless arseholes, from those in the west that boil lobsters alive {and eat them after} to the scum in the far east that boil dogs and cats alive {and eat them}, mankind is a nasty piece of work and really deserves to burn in hell for its vile treatment of its food animals, and the far eastern butchers will be first in line.

What I find interesting is the contradiction in the people that are 100% enraged when animals they designate as pets are harmed in any way that find all kinds of ways to excuse abuse and/or cruelty when it comes to animals they designate as food.

100% agree with Andy. I think the boiling process of humans should start first in China/South Korea/Vietnam. If they are taught their lessons the rest of the world would learn by itself.

Oh but there are a lot of people who had mixed opinion that Lobsters dont make sense and its just waste of time/waste of tax dollars to address such issues.

Animal cruelty is equal to all creatures, be it boling lobsters alive or skinning the cats alive or torturing the dogs before death. Creatures do go through the stress which is cruel.

Thanks Bams, Andy, Chastadi and Mandy for your opinion. Got some sensible answers atlast.

I can tell you that they do feel pain. There have been tests done (with the little stick on thingies so the lobsters were not harmed) that proved that lobsters do have the nerves and receptors needed to feel pain. Pain was NOT inflicted on the lobsters, the were just tested to see of they were capable of feeling pain. I will have to get the website from my brother-in-law.

Also on that note carrots also feel pain and have sympathy for other carrots. Trust me.

i'm a vegan, not remotely stick thin or anaemic, take no supplements whatsoever and would never think of boiling a crustacean alive or killing an animal just so i could eat it. i can't imagine why you would want to do that and i do think they feel pain - doesn't anything with a nervous system. isn't it better to err on the side of caution and assume they do and treat them accordingly?

A dear friend of mine from Maine has this to say about boiling lobsters

"See, for the lobsters it's a welcome relief. The waters of the Atlantic are very cold.

Think of when you go from the hotel pool into the hotel hot tub.

It's kind of like that."

Well a friend's opinion is not a standard for the lobsters feeling the pain or not. He must be just like you eating the meat and enjoying the kill. You are no better than a south korean. So keep the friend's opinion to your self. Anyways you dont bother replying. We have had sensible people addressing this issue. So thanks a lot for all that rucous that you created yesterday.

We are talking about BOILING WATER and not just hot water.

I have my doubts whether you are THE GAME guy/girl whos changed the name/profile. He/She replies this way.

Well they are people who care for all creature irrespective of creatures being lobsters, cats or dogs. Well I have known a group of people who are passionate about Lobster, crabs and fishes. Infact these group of people travel almost all places in the world exhibiting their varied collection of fishes, lobsters, crabs. And the best part is trust me Lobsters, crabs, fishes do have fear, happiness etc.

ITS the way you perceive it. Its been a tradition all long that dogs, cats are known to people better than lobsters, crabs etc. So you cannot say that there is a difference. Its because you dont know them doesnt mean all people are like that. (smiles)

I didnt define sensible here. MY REPLY WAS A REPLY TO SOME INSANE HUMAN HERE. I HAVENT GENERALIZE THAT TO ALL. SO I DONT THINK ANYONE NEEDS TO FEEL ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

Vinee, I agree with you all the way.

you can notice lobsters throwing their bodies around, scraping the pan, desperately trying to escape.

Every creature on this earth must feel pain if they are alive.
