u>Why dose he not learn? My cat Ming love to get on the counters and the table and he love to drink out of the tolit and the sink. I hate that I have to punish him it is one the hardest things for me to do cuz I love him so much. But, I hate to have to close the bath room doors. But, what I hate the most is when I have to put him in the basement when he drinks out of the tolit or the sink. I have found no other way to punish him. He was able to do it for three years with his first owner who was not that smart and let him do whatever he wants. I do not think it is so smart that some let there cat get on there counters beacuse who wants cat liter all over there counters and table where you make and eat your food.

Big deal.. drinking out of the toilet? Why is this upsetting? Both of my dogs drink out of the toilet and will choose it over the fresh water I put out for them each day. Who cares.. as long as I don't have any chemicals in the water (which I don't).

As a cat owner, I assumed my cats were on the counter and before I ever cooked or worked out in the kitchen, I washed my counters down. If these things bother you.. welcome to cat ownership. I doubt you can train them easily, but it might be more frustrating than its worth. They are cats.. they climb and jump. My only rule is that they didn't do it when I was at home.

when I first got him he would do it behind my back and now he could give a crap less.

Hahaha... that's a cat! My husband once bet me that he trained our cats not to jump on the counter.. even if we left. I bet him $1.00 that he was wrong. So I sprinkled a light dusting of flour on my counter before we left. That night when we came home we found hundreds of precious little cat paw prints all over the counter.

I just made it a habit to use some Lysol spray and give the counter a good wipe down before cooking. It was easier than trying to train them.

Little stinkers.

Belles:

I used to swear by Lysol Tub and Tile Cleaner and used it religiously for years. BUT
recently I found the New Clorox Cleaner with Bleach and I LOVE IT! It smells so clean and they do the large refill bottle for your pump bottles.

I'm with you. With 11 cats and they each know exactly which spot on the the island or kitchen table that their special treat gets placed on. We do treats up where we can observe so those who are prone to 'stealing' (like MAX ,{give it to Max, he'll eat any thing}, and those who are more docile won't have to back off their treat and give it up to the greedy.

I suppose every body in the U.S. already knew about the Clorox product but since I am house bound and Tami does all the shopping, I JUST discovered it a month or so ago.

Thought I'd share anyway, just in case you hadn't discovered it... L.W.

Linda, I used to use both too, but have switched slowly over to products that don't test on animals.. both Lysol and Clorox do, so I won't buy their products. There are other more environmentally friendly products out on the market every day, so I'm making it a point to getting rid of as much as I can and making the switch.

Cat does not know he is being punished by putting in the basement. Keep the toilet lid down. Use a squirt bottle filled with water and spray when caught in the act while walking towards him with a firm NO. They get it but YOU have to B consistant and stop what your doing to make the correction everytime. Animals live in the moment so by putting him in basement you are assuming that they think like we do. They don't. They must be trained and taught what U expect from them. Hope this helps. I have 9 inside cats and no counters etc, but it took diligence and work on my part to accomplish this. Bobbie

Rq....
I agree - lysol is my friend. I have one cat that just discovered the kitchen faucet drip. She jumps up onto the ledge right by the sink - never on the counter. I just wipe it down extra good before I cook. I always wipe them down anyway.
2 others just like to get on the breakfast bar and just "look". We don't use it but a counter is a counter....so I tried lining up empty pop cans they would knock into when jumping and hopefully scare them from there. Well the only good it did was to scare them to where they decided not to jump on the counter (all of this in mid air mind you) and came tight down in their water bowls. BIG MESS.

Then gave 2-sided tape a try - OMG - I wished I would have video taped it and put it on you tube. Tape stuck real well to the paw but not so well to the counter. Poor cat was going crazy trying to shake the tape off and managed to miss the water bowls but not the food bowls. AGain a BIG MESS.

I now have a big tub of lysol wipes in a pull tab dispenser on my kitchen....less messy and it works.

LOL.. how funny.

I just gave up. As long as they don't do it in front of me, I guess I really don't mind too much. Not sure why it bothered me so much in the first place.. I do wipe everything down before I'm out there. I still do it and don't even have a cat anymore. I swear, I have more stray dog hairs than I ever had a problem with cat hairs.
