Center for Biological Diversity Action: before the June 15th deadline -- to ask the Environmental Protection Agency to act quickly to address acidification before it inflicts irreversible damage to life below the sea's surface.

Our oceans are in serious trouble. As they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the CO2 reacts with seawater, causing it to become more acidic. This spells trouble for marine life because corrosive waters make it difficult for animals to build their protective shells. You can help protect oceans from acidification by writing a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency today.

Already, the oceans have become about 30 percent more acidic as fossil-fuel combustion increases amount of CO2 they absorb. Ocean acidification, global warming's evil twin, is one of the greatest threat to ocean ecosystems. For the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency is beginning a public process to determine approaches to addressing this sleeper crisis under the Clean Water Act.

Take a moment now -- before the June 15th deadline -- to ask the Environmental Protection Agency to act quickly to address acidification before it inflicts irreversible damage to life below the sea's surface.

NRDC Biogems Action: Help protect grizzly bears from a deadly mining scheme

In the lush forests and meadows of the Cabinet-Yaak wilderness in northwest Montana, a small population of 20 to 30 grizzly bears hovers on the brink of extinction. This isolated group of grizzlies is already threatened by increased development, habitat loss and high levels of grizzly mortality. Now, officials in the Kootenai National Forest are considering a proposal for a mine that would drill thousands of feet directly beneath the grizzlies' habitat. The Mines Management Corporation wants to drill for 120 million tons of ore-bearing rock over the course of the next 16 years, even though environmental studies have shown that the project would displace grizzlies from their critical habitat, destroy at least five streams and increase road development as well as the potential for poaching. The approval of this mine would likely have devastating effects on the grizzly population.

NPCA Action: Mining in the Flathead River Valley is not appropriate and that this area should be protected

The pristine wilderness, majestic wildlife, and clean water of Glacier National Park are threatened by a Canadian proposal to literally push a mountain into the Flathead River just miles upstream from Glacier's boundary.

The spectacular landscape of Glacier and the larger Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park are so exceptional they've been designated a United Nations World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve. And the current British Columbia land use plan encourages mining and oil and gas development in the Flathead River Valley, adjacent to these magnificent places.

This plan is inappropriate and unnecessary. This area should be protected as one of the last remaining pristine landscapes in North America.

To draw attention to this threat, NPCA submitted a petition to add Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park to the list of World Heritage sites "In Danger." And the World Heritage Committee will be meeting later this month and ruling on that petition.

Take action now: Send a message to the United Nations, Canadian officials, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior letting them know that strip-mines don't belong upstream from Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park and that this ecosystem deserves better protection for present and future generations.

Thanks for your help in protecting Glacier and its neighboring lands!

Center for Biological Diversity Action: Save Mexican Gray Wolves From Being Trapped and Shot

Highly endangered Mexican gray wolves are paying the price for unrelated cattle deaths in the Gila National Forest.

In recent months, the carcasses of dead cattle have been carelessly left in the open, perilously close to two of the only three packs of wild Mexican gray wolves in New Mexico. Though wolves did not cause the cattle deaths, the scent of rotting meat is luring the packs close to vulnerable livestock herds — and that’s likely to drive them to prey on cattle instead of elk.

Once wolves begin killing livestock, it's only a matter of time before the government will step in, trapping and shooting them. Please, send a letter to the Gila National Forest and the Fish and Wildlife Service now urging them to clean up the cattle carcasses immediately and ensure that scavenging wolves are held blameless for subsequent depredations.

EarthJustice ACTION: Protect Your Drinking Water From Toxic Chemicals

Did you know that the oil and gas industry, thanks to Dick
Cheney and his old friends at Halliburton, are exempted from the
Safe Drinking Water Act?

That's right: thanks to a provision slipped into the
highly-controversial Energy Policy Act of 2005 at the request of
Halliburton, Exxon and a handful of other corporations, the oil
and gas industry was exempted from having to comply with
critical provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act -- a law that
protects underground sources of drinking water for millions of
Americans.

This exemption has allowed hydraulic fracturing -- a process
that increases oil and gas yields by shooting an oftentimes
toxic brew of chemicals underground at high pressures -- to go
completely unregulated by federal law.

Hydraulic fracturing is already suspected of endangering
drinking water in six states. However, due to the "Halliburton
Loophole" exemption, EPA lacks the authority to investigate
instances of contamination and cannot regulate this
controversial practice.

Thankfully, concerned members of Congress in both the House and
Senate have recently introduced legislation to close the
"Halliburton Loophole" and ensure that Big Oil has to follow the
same laws that every other industry does.

H.R. 2766, introduced by Diana DeGette (D-CO), Maurice Hinchey
(D-NY), and Jared Polis (D-CO); and S. 1215 introduced by Bob
Casey (D-PA) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) would regulate hydraulic
fracturing under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Please contact your congressperson and senators and ask them to
cosponsor these important pieces of legislation.

Wilderness Society Action: Tell the EPA to create strong regulations on greenhouse gases

Recently the Environmental Protection Agency made a move that signaled the end of Bush-era climate denial. On April 17, the EPA issued a finding that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases endanger our public health and welfare.

This is good because it gives the EPA the authority and the obligation to regulate global warming pollution. However, those with a vested interest in dirty fuels and the status quo are rallying support to shoot down this finding.

Take action now!

The EPA is asking for the public to comment on their "endangerment finding" as a first step towards regulating global warming pollutants. This marks the first time a presidential administration has solicited public comment regarding the harm we anticipate, and already experience, from dangerous heat-trapping pollution. Your voice is needed.

Please send a loud and clear message to the EPA telling them to push forward now. Ask them to establish rules and regulations that will put America on a path to a clean energy economy that protects the health of our families and our treasured public lands.

Defenders of Wildlife Action: North America's bats are in trouble, and I need your help to save them.

A mysterious disease called white-nose syndrome has already claimed the lives of an estimated one million of these often misunderstood flying mammals. The spread of this terrible disease shows now sign of slowing, with white-nose syndrome killing nearly 100% of the bats at some hibernating sites.
Our bats are an important part of healthy ecosystems, eating insects like mosquitoes that can carry West Nile Virus and other pathogens and consuming other bugs that can threaten our forests and crops.

Please help me save our bats from this emerging disease by urging your U.S. Representative and Senators to take decisive action to fight white nose syndrome and save bats.

Please Take Action For Dogs and Cats in Korea
Tuesday, July 14, 2009

The International Day of Action for Dogs and Cats in Korea is July 14. In Defense of Animals (IDA) will again be co-sponsoring this worldwide event to stop the terrible suffering these animals endure.

IDA continues to work with the South Korean animal protection organization Coexistence for Animal Rights on Earth (CARE) to end the brutal slaughter of dogs and cats for human consumption. Forced to live in tiny, filthy cages and killed in unimaginably cruel ways, they deserve a voice.

Two million South Korean dogs are electrocuted, strangled, or bludgeoned to death each year. They are killed in the cruelest ways imaginable, because some Koreans believe the adrenaline that rushes through the system will improve virility.

Eyewitnesses have reported dogs being torn apart while still alive, their tormentors saying that the more prolonged the torment of death, the better the taste. This attitude toward any living being is deplorable.

Building coalitions around the world, IDA is creating the network needed to put pressure on the government of the Republic of Korea to end this tragic practice.

(Important note - all references herein to "Korea" are to the Republic of Korea, or South Korea. The problems for dogs and cats are probably at least as bad in North Korea, but we do not have activists in North Korea with whom to partner. If you have information concerning activists in North Korea working to improve the lives of animals, please let us know.)

What ELSE You Can Do Today:

Send letters, fax, e-mail to:
Ambassador Duk-soo Han
Embassy of the Republic of Korea
2320 Massachusetts Ave. NW
Washington, D.C. 20008
(202) 939-5600
fax (202) 797-0595
e-mail: mailto:korinfo@koreaemb.org

(use this info and the blurb below for the body of your email or fax. ACT NOW!)

More Information About Dogs And Cats In South Korea

The practice of eating dogs is not widely accepted in Korea. It gained popularity after the Korean War due to widespread starvation. The practice continues to thrive with the aid of greedy restaurateurs, meat dealers, and butchers.

Many Koreans love dogs and keep dogs as companions. However, we must take action to stop the small contingent of people who blithely ignore the law and continue to abuse these innocent beings to make money.

It is unacceptable that dogs and cats should be kept in filthy crates, forced to watch one another be bludgeoned to death. It is illegal in Korea and it is the Korean government’s responsibility to ensure that anyone who breaks their laws be strictly punished.

On July 14, IDA intends to have activists posted at the Korean Embassy in Washington D.C. and as many Korean Consulates and Embassies around the world as possible. There are Korean Consulates in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, Houston, Honolulu, and Newton, Massachusetts. If you would like to help coordinate a demonstration in any of these cities, please contact Hope@idausa.org or (415) 448-0048 ex. 211. We will provide you with all the materials you need such as posters and brochures to have a successful and effective protest.

If you have already planned an event, please register your event here so you can connect with other activists in your area. http://www.idausa.org/campaigns/korea/event_signup.html
