I have actually viewed the ASPCA list as well as several other reputable web sites lists (e.g. Cornell) of common household poisonous plants however, I have been unsuccessful in locating any information about the Astromedia plant. (They look like miniature lillies, although they do not have a scent, come in an array of colors and freshly cut, can last for up to 2-3 weeks! They are usually purchased at the local supermarkets and I especially enjoy them and it appears that my cat does too!!) I have never witnessed him actually nibbling on them, but he does make every effort and will go to great lengths (heights ...he jumps up on the refrigerator) to get to them and that makes me nervous. Since I have been unable to uncover the "mystery" behind the flower, I have decided not to purchase them any longer (at least in the interim). Any information would be greatly appreciated & Thanks for your time!

Leeann,

I think you mean the alstromeria plant based on your description. These are sometimes known as Lily-of-the-Incas or Peruvian lily. They can cause stomach upset when ingested. The bulb is the most poisonous part of the plant. Eating the bulb can cause severe vomiting and nervous system signs.

These are not what we call true lilies -- which include tiger lilies, Easter lilies, stargazer lilies, etc. which can cause kidney failure in cats. (Day lilies can also cause this.)

Well, I guess that explains why I was unsuccessful in locating any information on the flower. Chances are that he probably would want to nibble and I would not want to cause him stomach distress so I guess I will just save the fresh cut alstromeria for the "office". Thank you again!
