I recently learned Macadamia nuts are the worst; however, no peanuts should be given.
Peanut butter coated products, or products containing peanut butter seem to be ok.
Peanuts are not toxic to dogs -- although they are high in fat so some dogs who are sensitive to fat may get vomiting, diarrhea, or inflammation of the pancreas. And, ingestion of the shells could cause a foreign body. So peanut butter in moderation should be fine.
The only nut we worry about are macadamia nuts (although to be perfectly correct, peanuts are not true nuts but legumes); macadamia nuts can cause mild weakness and tremors. However, nuts, in general, are high in fat. But my dogs enjoy an occasional almond.
Sorry I couldn't respond sooner, the family was being demanding. :)
