I'm afraid my Calico, Katie, is beginning to suffer from the affects of her age. She is seven now, and seems to have some stiffness in her back legs at the top. It's not painful to her because I can put a little pressure there and she doesn't move or meow. Most cats can trot very easily. It's hard for Katie. When I come home from work, she trot's to the door to meet me. She twists her spine from side to side in the process. It appear very awkward. I plan to make her a vet appointment. In the meantime, if anyone has any comments, feel free...

GOOD NEWS!

Survivor mentioned in previous post HAS A NEW HOME.

A pretty young lady, Jessica whose daddy always buys my paperback sci fi books at our periodic garage sales stopped by and said "Daddy said come look at the kitty and see if she liked her" LOL a pretty girl and a fluffy little black ball of frisky fun........We have a discount shot clinic just three blocks away and a promise that she will ONLY be an inside kitty because our neighborhood has two resident Raccoons plus the biggest predators of all "Cars". Kitty should be named "Lucky" having escaped the fate of her litter mates plus a 'forever home' all in the same week. I feel better now! Somehow the Universe always seems to provide...and even if young miss Jessica hadn't fallen instantly in love, the little fluff ball was having a grand time with my motley crew.

Here I go again! Tue.July 15, 3pm, the phone rang and a neighbor (next door, in the apt. with a for rent sign for an empty unit that read in large letters "NO PETS", said, "I don't know if your son told you BUT.."we got got a kitten. It is about 6 weeks old and a friend took another litter mate from a batch found in a neighbors shed. Later the owner of the shed stuffed the rest of the kittens in a green garbage bag and tossed them out on the freeway..where an 18 wheeler hit and ran over them". Someone saw and reported this horror and the local police came to the friends house and asked if they could have a vet take a blood sample in order to assert the dead kittens were one in the same litter as the one they were known to have retrieved from the shed of the poor excuse of a human being neighbor. This occurred in another city about 40 miles away so THIS kitten was not tested as it had already been delivered to MY neighbor, here in Reno.
Sooo, their landlord is remodeling and restoring the rental next to theirs and had planned to do some cosmetic work on their unit..beginning This very afternoon. He is disabled and she just started a new job and they are terrified of being evicted. "Please, please" they said, can you take this kitty and find it a forever home. It came with food & H2O dish, kitty litter box, food and litter (and weepy eyes..not crusty just clear weepy).
There is a discussion elsewhere on this board, about "People who can't afford proper vet care have no business taking pets!!! (fortunately, in 10 years, I have only had 2 sick kitties)
So according to that principle, my answer should have been 'nope, sorry, I can't afford the necessary tests and shots nor the risk to my other healthy 10 forever rescues. (those are just the ones that I felt compelled over the last 13 years to keep, rather then expose severely physically damaged animals to ANY possibility of further abuse or loss. I COULD NOT SAY THOSE WORDS.

It is kitten season and the rescue groups, our no kill shelter and other rescuers are up to their necks in kitties.

She is a good little eater, female, long haired pure black with lots of spunk, a thick shiny coat and a clear nose, pink mouth and those weepy eyes. No evidence of upper respiratory distress. She has used her kitty litter box to piddle twice but evidently hadn't learned to cover her deposit yet. My others will no doubt show her by example..one can hope, anyway.

Sooo, if you are a Nevadan, from Lake Tahoe to Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Fernley, Fallon, or Stagecoach etc. and want to open your home and heart to to this baby who by sheer luck escaped the fate of her litter mates...message me. AND Bams, Michael, Renee, Linda if you spot this, I could use a tip or two of what to use to possibly address the eye issue without the obvious answer of a VET which this silly old widow can't afford on Medicare and Social Security. (unless it is a matter of life and death where upon I can and have used "rob peter to pay Paul." So far I am using clear water frequently to keep them dry and clean..would a boric acid solution be safe and/or useful. No sniffles, coughing or wheezing! I am such a sucker and I just hope with malice and forethought that the P.O.S. who threw these other babies to their inevitable death rots in hell. Bless the police who valued those little lives enough to do the amazing act of going after him. I grow many organic herbs..several sages, 3 mints, oregano, 2 thyme's, tarragon, basil, rosemary, chives, garlic, comfrey, ...comfrey is very healing for people but kitties..(I don't know). Oh My! Somehow, it always works out but this is a really bad time of the year. ;o(

for sure terri. i left a couple months ago for that very same reason. we are all entitled to our opinions but if we are bickering at one another, nothing is getting acomplished. we are here for the animals. the animals that suffer everyday and our very that we love so much. we need to saty on track and focus on what's really important....the animals.

I too agree that this is not a site for tit and tat. I beleive that everyone and anyone is entitled to their opionion. But when it starts to become a conflict between two, it should stay between two not the entire community. I hope that this can be resolved and we remember that we are here to share our experiences our knowledge and our advise. We are bigger than the exchange of words. Let this word exchange be constructive not damaging to the cause.

Anna, that is a terrible situation. I guess you are kinda stuck. At least NY has the A cops there... but still. Maybe your friend can ask that terrible owner if she could take the cat anyway, and see what happens. I know what you mean about people letting their cats outside... its just not acceptable and there are so many reasons why... even HSUS put out a list for that... called "Your Cat—Indoors or Out". I didnt have the link but you can find it by searching on their site. But anyway... good luck!! I wish we could help!

Eric, from what I have read from several sources... raw food diets are NOT good for cats or dogs. This is because the meats we get from the store are not always safe. Its not the same as them eating animals in the wild... so I would say not to do that. There are already too many meat recalls every year as it is. Its just not safe. If your cat has a senstive tummy, there is food you can get specifically for that from a vet's office. Or try something more natural like Wellness or Newman's own food. They can be purchased at Whole foods or online. I have used both for my cats. Also, take your kitty for a check up and make sure everything is fine. Sometimes cats can get an acidic tummy like people do and can be given certain antacids too... but that has to be decided by your vet. Good luck!
Regina Dickerson Comment by Regina Dickerson on July 12, 2008 at 10:39am
Eric, Did your vet recommend the raw diet food to you??? if not , ask him/her what they would suggest on feeding her. The raw idea maybe the wrong solution. BTW, cats vomit from time to time to get their hair ball out of their stomach. That's why they eat grass.

To the person that found this cat and then gave it to someone to care for it. Tell the owner of the cat to pony up and pay the vet bill and he can have the cat back or ask the Vet what he thinks.
