Gail Goad:

A cat who has kidney/bladder/urinary tract infections will avoid the litter box in an attempt to relieve the pain and discomfort felt- associating the litter box with the pain and discomfort. So will cats who have kidney failure. Finding alternative places to urinate/defecate, in true cat logic, is an attempt to find a spot where the urination/defecation is easier and where there is not pain or discomfort. Even if you give this cat antibiotics it is only suppressing the problem, not correcting it. Allowing this cat to have the run of the apartment is also compounding the problem.

Find the cause of why there are kidney infections. You may think the antibiotics are correcting it, but obviously, on some level they are not correcting the whole problem. Kidney infections can occur if bacteria is allowed to travel up the urinary tract to the kidneys, if the litter is not changed often enough, and if the cat's immune system is extremely low.Kidney infections can also occur as the result of urinary tract infections, which can occur of too much dry cat food is given, not enough water is consumed, bacteria forms producing crystals which scrape the bladder walls and which can eventually form a plug in the urinary tract.

Restrict your cat to one small area of the house- a bathroom, with bedding and a litter box. Correct the kidney infections of all levels. Find out if there are crystals/blood in the urine. Restrict the dry cat food and give cranberry capsules if there are. Increase water consumption. Once you have corrected the problem, clean the areas of your house which have been urinated/defecated on with an enzymatic cleaner and slowly re-introduce your cat.

There is actually nothing wrong with how your cat has reacted to the pain and discomfort she is feeling. You may find it inconvenient but you have allowed a cat to have the run of an entire apartment and have not permanently corrected the kidney infection problem. Your cat is coping with this in the best way she knows how. Correct the problem of kidney infections and your cat will stop urinating/defecating all through the apartment as a coping mechanism.

Do all you can and ask your vet for a more extensive work up as suggested in the first article... rule that out, esp. if your cat already has infections. I know its hard, but you seem to love your cat and they are always worth the effort.

Gail, she could be very stress from moving from one place to another but Deborah has a good idea on the Cat Attract. Had you just put her in one room with her food and litter box?????
Deborah Smith Comment by Deborah Smith on April 12, 2009 at 7:11pm
I have heard that an litter additive called Cat Attract works quite well! And if there is something that you do not want the cat on use lemon scented cleansers

You might want to call your local vet offices and to see if they have any kittens that have lost their mom...... may be worth it.

It is definitely heartwrenching, but in time she will get over it if you can't find a replacement. This might also be a good time to get her altered, it might help at least with the hormones. Good luck!

cats will walk around "sounding" for their babies for as long as two weeks, sometimes longer. She will eventually stop but in the meantime it is important not to get mad at her because that is natural to any feline. The coment below is a good idea. If you have a vet or humane society close that has orphans you can see if she would nurse them. It will not only help them but will help her if she is still lactating. How old were the babies?
Brandi Ohara Comment by Brandi Ohara on April 4, 2009 at 6:20pm
for the cat that had babies and now lost them to dogs they are always looking for a mother cat at a pound to feed babies hope this helps
