Dinah,

never use pet stores to "place" an animal. We all need to boycot them due to puppy mills anyway.

Declawing, which removes these claws, bones, and cartilage, is a painful and permanently crippling procedure that should never be performed. There are effective and humane alternatives to declawing that can prevent cats from inflicting damage with their claws.

Ann, there are other options than having a cat euthanized or made homeless... many places would take them (no kill shelters) if it was the only option. Also, declawing is not the only option either... Soft paws WORK. Also, it is a fact that many vets wont even do declawing these days because it is cruel. We will have to agree to disagree then... and it sounds like you may be taking my comments personally because you have declawed your cats. There are may opinions in this community. I am not the only one who knows that declawing was horrible, and even if I were, I would never change my mind. You dont have to change your mind either, so let our different opinions be just that.

Dear Dinah

I hope your story is a bad joke?! If not get hold of your local SPCA,let them look into it. It is definantly not proper, who knows what else they do?!

What kind of snakes do they sell, that could be another issue. Snakes ,unfortunately, depending on the type, feed on mice n captivity.

Good you checked the store first. For finding a home for your fathers cat's ,why not contact a humane society for animals?

For Athena 89
Just a note that before judging people and and vets who declaw you need to check the facts...a declawed cat is much better than a homeless one (or a euthanised one) and you obviously do not know what bartonella is.
People have their own personal reasons for the surgery and it would not to be intentionally cruel.
Sometimes it is the only avenue. Just to let you know I am a proud cat mom of 4 cats that happen to be declawed for human health reasons and they live the best lives cats could ever live and I am a good person and I am certain that the vets who declaw are too.

Dear Marshy's family,

With utter clarity, I know that one of the greatest gift I can give to my three cats is that of relieving their suffering when the time comes.

I know this is VERY hard. But, think about it from Marshy's vantage. She can no longer be the cat she once was. In fact, being so sick, she is no longer living like a cat. I believe that when our pet can no longer have the quality of life it should as a healthy pet, then we, as their owners should free them of their suffering.

Marshy is suffering. Your new baby will soon arrive and all attention will be on him/her. Marshy will likely decline further with the new arrival - even though a joyous time for us, the arrival of a newborn can be stressful for cat, particularlyone who is not well.

Think about Marshy, her quality of life and where this illness will inevitably lead. Prolonging her life, a life of pain that she cannot express is not, I'm sure, how she wants to live.

Warm wishes and best of luck.

Dear Marcha
About your cat with possible cancer. I emphasize with you 100%, as I recently lost my "late" son's cat Bonzai to what I believe was grief. My son passed on a few years ago to that terrible illnes.

That is a lot of suffering to come, regardless, do you want your cat to go through that. I held onto Bonzai for a long time as he was my last living link to my son.

In looking back, and with the quiet coment by a friend, when I weept for him, she said :" you knew it was coming, sometimes it is unfortunate, because we hold on for ourselves sometimes, not thinking what is best for the cat!"

The Question to you is:" do you really want him to suffer more, or let him go in peace?" Think about it.

Isolate the two for the time being. Have her checked by a doctor. When she gives birth, let her have at least one kitten by her. That is what I did,and my cat became social and gentle with time.
Males are an inate danger for females when pregnant or giving birth, it is part of nature with the cat family. It passes in due time.

Truly sorry for your loss, I have gone through the same thing, my cat Marley died the same way, Julie and I put him on dialasis for 2 weeks and he still passed. It was like losing a family member. Tough on anyone.
