I was thinking of making dog treats for my pooch and for my friends pooch for christmas but i was wondering if garlic powder is safe or other small amounts like clove dangerous to the dog? The amount is 1 tablespoon. Can anyone help me?

How big is your dog is the bigger factor in that...1 Tbsp might not be much to a 100lb dog but could be a lot to a 10lb dog...I know of many dog treats that use garlic powder without any issue at all.

This is from http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/IsThatPoisonous/KitchenToxins/

Onions and garlic:
When onions and garlic are ingested in large or chronic amounts, it result in Heinz body formation and anemia. Cats are more sensitive than dogs to Allium toxiciosis. Clinical signs are generally secondary to the anemia, with resultant weakness, lethargy and pale mucous membranes. Avoid using onion or garlic powder chronically in pet food, and make sure your pet doesn't ingest large amounts!

I'm still trying to find out what they consider a "large amount" of garlic for a 10 lb. dog. Like Lani, I would be extremely reticent to give any garlic to such a small dog.

I know that aunt jeni's homemade raw frozen products still contain garlic -- but they don't list the amount. So my 70 pound dog has had a regular diet of garlic for the past 4 years with no noticeable problems. Yet there are some (even vets) that advise against any garlic whatsoever. I guess that the jury is still out on this issue. Personally, I would leave it out of the recipe.

He's a 10lb dog. what would you all consider for the amounts? For the garlic itself or for the other ingredients. Would i half the amount of the garlic or doulbe the amount of the other ingredients?

I can't find a specific weight-amount ratio. Have you tried consulting your vet? Honestly, with such a small dog, I wouldn't risk it. What's the point?

Do you think it will make the treat taste any different if i didn't put the ingredients in? I'll have to wait to consult my vet because i don't know my schedule yet. I'll have to wait to make the treats til next week anyway when i get my check. :b

It will not make a difference in the taste, please do not risk it. It is not safe, either is onions and can kill a dog, especially a small dog.

Garlic even in trace amounts is toxic to dogs. Some dogs, cannot even handle a trace amount and some can handle a bit more, but you don't know. Your dog can be allergic to it, and it is on every toxic list. Please, do not take chances.

Since you seem to have a voice of authority, could I ask you to please call the aunt jeni's homemade company (google their website) and talk to their nutritionist about garlic in their products? I otherwise like their products and would love for them to omit the garlic -- but I am not a voice of authority on this issue.

Thanks!

No, because as a vet, I have seen to many dogs die. Large dogs, medium dogs, and small dogs. I will not take any possible chance with my own period. I will not think about trying it and I will never look into it. As long as I see, a owner grieving for there pet, I will not take part. I don't care if every holistic or organic person in the world tells me how fine their dogs are doing on garlic, and how safe it is. As long as it is on the toxic list, I will not risk or chance the death or illness of my beloved dogs. If clients are still showing up with ill pets, than I know it is not safe. Some, can take a trace amount and some can stand a bit more. I will never risk it. My vow to my animals is to keep them safe and healthy at all times. Michael

Okay thanks. I haven't made the treats yet and since the garlic and onion stuff won't affect the taste I'll mark it out and share the rest of the recipe with you all and some others if you want them. That is if my dog like's them. ;b (he's picky)xb
