Stop Ohio from Banning Pit Bulls StatewideTarget:Governor Ted Strickland, Rep. Tyrone Yates & Ohio LawmakersSponsored by: Concerned Pet ParentsWithout your help, Ohio may become the first State to ban pit bulls.

Please let Ohio lawmakers know how you feel about their plan to make it illegal to own pit bulls, that there are better ways to protect the public from dangerous dogs and that pit bulls are not necessarily dangerous dogs.

Ask these lawmakers to solve Ohio's dog issues through effective dangerous dog ordinances, funding low cost and free spay/neuter clinics, banning tethering of dogs, and stregthening Ohio's antiquated animal cruelty laws.

Pertinent Sections of House Bill 568 -

Sec. 955.111. (A) Beginning ninety days after the effective date of this section, no person shall own, keep, or harbor a dog that belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog.
(B) Not later than ninety days after the effective date of this section, a person who owns, keeps, or harbors a pit bull dog on the effective date of this section shall surrender the dog to the dog warden. Not later than ten days after receiving the dog, the dog warden shall euthanize the dog.
(C)(1) Beginning ninety days after the effective date of this section, if an officer has probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull dog, the officer may apply to a court of competent jurisdiction for a search warrant. The court shall issue a search warrant for the purposes requested if there is probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull dog.

(2) After obtaining a search warrant, an officer shall seize the pit bull dog and surrender the dog to the dog warden. Not later than ten days after receiving the dog, the dog warden shall euthanize the dog.

If there gonna ban pitbulls they might as well ban all dogs. Pitbulls are hated because of their breeding history. They were bred for game, dog fighting. but then any other dog you have was bred for something not to off that. The bull dog was bred to control Bulls in the ring. which made them an aggressive dog and bred them to they could withold the beatings. If it wasnt for the bull dog later being bred with a pug they wouldnt be good house pets. the great dane was bred to hunt and kill fox. Any dog no matter what if they get that first taste of blood they want more and will become aggressive. I have an american Pitbull Terreir whos blood line consist of Razor Edge and Watch dog. Which is perfect for an ideal family pet but no matter what if i were to treat her bad she would probably turn and become aggressive. We should Ban certain people from own pit bulls. Not the breed.

omg. i had no idea they were doing this until now. they absolutely can not ban pit bulls. they're dogs. what next are they gonna ban ALL dogs. i just absolutely hate when everybody goes against pit bulls. there is no need for it. i mean what is so wrong with them that they need to be BANNED from ohio. they on reason some of them attack is because that is the way they were bred. but with proper training the fierce pit bulls wont be a threat to anyone. and i agree if one state does this probably other states will follow. and usually a lot of pit bulls are so friendly. i think this is terrible. is there any way to stop this?

Pit bulls have unfortunately have a history of being used to fight to the death whether it is to kill another pit or another animal. These dogs do deserve special respect and attention I feel and I feel need to be handled differently than most other dogs. Pit bulls are my breed of choice and I cannot imagine a day without my pit. She is the sweetest and most loving dog I have out of 4 dogs. But, I think that has a lot to do with my husband and I being responsible owners. Blaming the dogs (in the case of the pit bulls) for showing aggression or not having the best manners is ignorance at its best. People truly need to consider what kind of responsibility they want when they chose a puppy. Do the research and become an informed dog owner. I am a firm believer that you cannot show a dog too much love, but I do feel that discipline is part of loving your animal as well. I refer to my dogs as my kids.....would I let my kids get away with being aggressive or not showing respect? No! So I expect my dogs to not show aggression and show respect as well. Do I love them? I would die for them in a heart beat like they would for me as well!

Wow thats not good. One state does it, they all usually follow. I love pits because they are beautiful to me. My boyfriend has an american pit and I love him to death and I don't know what I would do if I lost him. That's my baby along with all the other kittys and doggies. How do I help if i do not live in Ohio?

I know that most pit bulls owned by most people are really great animals and generally freindly. But thats not really the point. The point is that they are potentially extremely dangerous. I found this website looking for information about laws here. My neighbor owns 2 pit bulls, and he seems to be loosing his control over them, and as he spends more nights out they are getting more aggressive. Recently they broke a window from inside, and I'm beginning to get frightened by them. When I think of the fact that my wife remembers a baby being decapitated by a pit bull on her suburban street when she was a kid, or I remember the kid on my street who's face was irreparably mauled by a pit bull, I have to ask myself if a ban is not a better answer. I'm not afraid of dogs generally, and I've gotten to know these two pitbull while they were puppies and things were great. But when these dogs bark at me through the window and I know they can break through the window, I now think twice about using my back entrance where I have to pass their window. Other dogs barking at me through that window would not scare me so much. I can't control how my neighbor raises his dogs. Maybe a lot of people on this forum have never heard of pit bull attacks but I certainly have and I find it really frightening. Remember that woman in france who was given the first face transplant? pit bull.

Ignorance is a killer.. My pit is 7 yrs old Ive had him since he was a baby. He has never shown a sign of aggression. Everyone loves him and are shocked when they ask what kind of dog he is and i say pit bull. He has changed many peoples opinions of the breed. They are beautiful, wonderful, loving dogs. Stop punishing the breed and start punishing the scum that abuses them.

There is another bill which will REMOVE the BSL, but we need to take some action! Ohio House Bill 79, http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/bills.cfm?ID=128_HB_79

It's a proposed change to Ohio's current Breed Specific Legislation sponsored by Representative Sears and co-sponsored by Skindell, Stebelton, Wachtmann. The Bill, if passed, would remove breed specific wording from the Ohio Revised Code.

This bill is in the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. It was introduced by a Republican, and now that the House is Democrat, it may not see any progress. If you're interested in seeing this Bill progress, I'd suggest you contact the Committee chair person John Domenick at http://www.house.state.oh.us/index.php?option=com_displaymembers&task=detail&district=95

An email to John Domenick's office received a reply that they had hearing from the sponsors, but no further hearings are scheduled at this time - not a good sign IMO that this Bill is getting much attention.
