I understand that completely Regina - I got Patrick from Wayside Waifs (associated with the local Humane Society). He was about 10 - 11 months old then and has been with me for over 11 years now. He is the first pet I got while living on my own. I don't know I'll make it when he's gone. I just don't let myself dwell on it now - no reason to mourn before he's gone.

I had owned a german shepherd mixed. Beautiful dog!! Lived to 12 and 1/2 years old. Got him from the Humane Shelter at about 3 months old. He loved to play with dirt balls and rocks. I miss him. My first oldest pet of my own, not the ones with your mom & dad.

I have a story about a German Sheperd, this was quite a few years back, but I think it says alot about their intelligence. The grade school I went to was right down the street from my house, and to get there, I had to pass Major's house. Major was a beautiful German Sheperd, whose only vice was barking at the kids as they walked by. He never hurt a soul. He just wanted the kids to come and play with him. Everyday, though, one group of kids, would walk by and tease him. They did it because they knew he was chained up. I told them one of these days, he wasn't going to be chained and they would be sorry. Major, had to distinct barks. One was for all of us who would walk by and say HI. He wanted us to come and play, and the owner said it was o.k., but to approach him slowly. The other bark was for those who teased and tormented him. That bark was a warning to stay away, because he didn't like them. A few weeks later, when I was walking past him, Major stood up, growling. I told him it was o.k., that I wasn't going to hurt him. He layed down, but he kept growling. I happened to notice, he had broken his chain. Then I noticed the group of kids that had been teasing him coming up from behind me, THAT was who he was growling at. I went around the corner and watched. When they got close, he layed there all pretty. When the one boy picked up a small stone to throw at him, he got the shock of his life. Major stood up and ran towards them. They didn't move until it was almost too late. When they realized his chain was broken, they ran like the devil was chasing them. Major didn't leave his yard, and they didn't stop running. I swear he was laughing at them. When the owner came out to see what all the commotion was about, I told him. Major didn't get into trouble, and from that day on those kids didn't tease him anymore.

My last GS was a good sized dog named Alek.He was ,at one time, a german trained ,german police dog!Could not undersatand one word of English. His neck was 26 inches around. We had to use a choke chain and buy a cable for the dog run because he broke everything else!!!He was sweet as could be until someone came up to us in a threatening manner.Very protective!! We all miss him.He died of old age!
