Christine, I know.. that video really shows what has happened to the dog lines over the generations. It's flabbergasting what they have done to these magnificent dogs.. it's so cruel. This is why I've got no time for the AKC.. they support this frame and won't consider a straight back GSD for best in show.

Also, just because your dog is straight back, does not mean it is of German lines. Many American GSD's are straight too.. alot of people make this mistake when trying to identify the lines of their dogs. On the flip side, the German lines are also now slanting.. just so they can show and win.

I'm suprised at the Royal Canine Club for endorsing this.. they were applauded for doing away with other standards - cropping in some breeds for example. I think it depends on the mindset of who is setting the breed standard.

Hedgewitch, didn't the ISSR upset alot of breeders.. and several splinter groups have been formed as a result. If this breed of dog ever hopes to achieve AKC recognition, then eventually that will have to be addressed before anything can be done to further the breed.

The Shiloh's I've seen have that slanted haunch and I just cringe when I see them. They are bred to be larger than the GSD and claim to have better hip health, but this is not healthy to carry their frames in this manner.

I wish the entire community could see this trend in these dogs and GSD's.. and put an end to this breed standard. It's sad and painful.

ISSR Shiloh Shepherds are not really knock offs of GSD, though GSD are in their foundation but so are other dogs. They are related but they are also very different in temperament, confirmation, health issues, and size.
They are at this time still a breed underdevelopment, though we have great hopes our studbooks will be closed sometime this year.

I just watched the video... how sad. I am so glad that my dogs are not show dogs..How could they do that to those poor dogs. Dogs should be part of the family loved and cared for .. My dogs are very much family dogs..( I even got 3 black paw prints tattooed on my leg for them) . womans best friend.

I just watched your video Belles. I cried when I saw those poor shepherds. They do not look healthy. I was appalled when the judge said that was the standard for the breed. For the past year I have been studying these kinds of things and I am convinced that Sargeant's bloodline must be from German working gsds. My boy has a beautiful gait when he trots around the yard. These poor dogs can barely walk. I have to agree, it is cruel what humans are doing to dogs all in the name of breed standard. I read a news report that said the AKC has changed the breed standard for English bulldogs. The new standard will not allow the nose to be so pushed in anymore. I applauded that choice because they were actually thinking of the dog's health for once. Is there anyway we can convince the AKC and groups like them to change their standards for GSDs?

I know... I showed the video to my husband right away, since he always says these dogs that squat down that much are pretty. He actually said he was a little disappointed that ours doesn't do it as much as his dad. Well but he never saw them actually MOVING. They can not even walk anymore! That is horrible... breeding is supposed to make a breed better but these ppl just breed the faults into the dogs! And then say that is good!
That is just cruel animals....
I never saw it that bad as in the video either.. its just shocking..

That's a wild video, huh? You learn so much about what they've done to these dogs over the generations.. it's insane. It breaks your heart to see them. As you can see from the video, that it is becoming the standard in the German lines as well, so you are not guaranteed straight back by buying the lineage.

I found the comments by the judge from the Royal show to be very disheartening. He's in complete denial and this is why a straight back German Shepherd will not ever win best in show.. they don't accept them as the breed standard.

My dog actually has a super far pedigree as well (he is from Germany, from my parents..long story)

Big difference if you ask me...
here is by the way his pedigree, since it goes back till 1900 you can really tell how the breed changed over time

BUT I (luckily) my pup never had such problems, he walks and runs great, but he is a working and show dog and was not just breed for show...
I actually think that you are better of to adopt (a GSD that may is mixed somewhere and so on) then get one of these show dogs..
