Hello all. Just found this website and joined this group. Our family just got a GSD puppy 2 days ago. My husband has owned a GSD before and we did even more research. You can never learn enough! We are enjoying every moment with her and she's already learning so much! Very happy with our new addition! :)

I agree Ted, unless you are used to GSD, we found a lot of people who are frightened by them, the dog senses the fear and seems to be more curious.

My wife and I have Fred, a 10y/o GSD rescue. He's is our 4th, and the 2nd from a rescue group. He lives with 5 cats.
GSD's can be a handful, but they love thier family and are so sweet. Some people are put off by the breed because of it's history (guard dog's, attack dog's, etc.) but just like Pit Bulls, it's all in the training!
As far as training goes, I always rememebr what a GSD trainer once told me, "If it's not thier idea, it's not a good idea". Just be patient, consisten and loving and they will learn. It's not that they are slow to learn, they are just so darn intelligent that they get bored easily.

As far AS OFF-LEASH, I know this won't be popular, but I'm not a fan of it. All dogs react based on nature, no matter how well they are trained. Letting them run free, in my opinion, is a recipe for disaster.

Good luck!

Hey I recently just adopted a german shepard female. The vet said she was spayed recently, has had her shots, and has had some obedience training. She was abandoned in the country and we figure she's aroung 1 1/2 to 2 years old. The only problem is she doesn't come when you call her now I have grown up with dogs and I am familiar with training them but I am unfamiliar with taking on a "stanger" dog and how go about fixing this one problem because I would love to have a dog that stays close because I like to hike and hunt and I want a dog that can follow me without a leash. HELP

Hi Tara! I'm doing the same with limiting the carrots and apples - in fact I've totally cut them out for the moment as my rabbit is on a diet. It's not doing much good as she's still a bit podgy! Ha ha! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who gets…
