In the High Desert of California animal cruelty laws are not enforced or punished.

All I could find was the comment page . I could not find any petition. I did sign on the comment but somehow it just never appear on the list.
I'm sorry to hear about your precious puppy. That was inexcusable and an outrage. I do hope something can be done about it. All of you are in our prayers.

That was it. Thank you for supporting Karleys family. This "monster" has been terrorizing the Tooles and other neighbors for years. There are even police reports about some of the things he's done such as shooting another dog of theirs with a pellet gun and beating his own daughter. The authorities until know have looked the other way and done nothing. Hopefully know they will have no choice but to punish him.

Hope there is something that can be done. This has to stop once and for all!!!

I read this and was going to put it up but I can busy with Bobbi lately I couldn't do it. I am glad Stephanie that you put this horrible story up about Karley. I wrote to the writer, he answered but didn't get anywhere. I also phoned a few numbers they had on the message I got in the email. Couldn't get to the source but will keep trying. I could not attend the demonstration in Riverside but if you went, how did it go? I have some pictures that I will post so people can see the mentally insane person that beat up Karley for no reason and how small Karley is and there is no way that the big hugh man got attack by Karley. That is B.S.!

L.A. County assistant fire chief under investigation in fatal beating of neighbor's dog

The 6-month-old shepherd mix is euthanized because of extensive injuries. The suspect, who has been placed on administrative leave, says he acted in self-defense.
By James Wagner
November 8, 2008
A Riverside teenager who left home to run an errand came home 20 minutes later to find paramedics, police and a firetruck outside his home. A neighbor took him to see the family dog, beaten and bleeding under a bush.

FOR THE RECORD:

Dog beating: A headline on an article in Saturday's California section about the beating of a dog in Riverside said that a Los Angeles County fire official had been arrested in the case. The official, Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson, was not arrested. He was placed on administrative leave from his job.

Online headline: The headline on an earlier version of this online article said Johnson was "held" in the beating; Johnson is not in custody. —

The female dog, a 6-month-old shepherd mix named Karley, allegedly was beaten by a neighbor, Los Angeles County Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson, who was placed on administrative leave Friday while the incident is investigated.

Johnson reportedly told investigators that he had acted in self-defense.

Karley was euthanized a few hours after the incident, which occurred about 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Karley apparently had run across Johnson's yard and into the next yard.

Travis Staggs said he started walking the dog home from his yard when Johnson offered to take Karley home.

"Then something in his head snapped and he started beating the dog," Staggs said.

Johnson allegedly punched Karley with a closed fist about a dozen times and then beat her with an 11-inch rock, Staggs said, adding that he tried to stop Johnson but was pushed away.

Authorities received two calls from the 17000 block of Armintrout Drive: one from a woman who said her husband was attacked by a dog, and another from a man who said his neighbor had beaten a dog, Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. David Barton said in a statement.

After Brandon Toole, 19, saw the injured dog, his 17-year-old sister, Heather, rushed the animal to a veterinarian, and later an animal intensive care unit.

Karley was euthanized because she was so badly injured, said Jeff Toole, the teenagers' father.

"I can't describe the way [Karley] looked and the pain she was in," Brandon Toole said.

Police said Johnson was taken to a hospital for wrist and thumb injuries.

Jeff Toole said the thumb puncture occurred when Johnson grabbed Karley's mouth and broke her jaw.

Johnson told his bosses about the incident, which he described as self-defense, said Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman.

"The Los Angeles County Fire Department is deeply concerned with allegations regarding Assistant Chief Glynn Johnson's actions in the beating of his neighbor's dog," Freeman said in a statement.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating. Malicious and intentional injuring of an animal is a felony.

The Toole family said Karley was a well-behaved dog.

"We are going to have to find another place to live," Jeff Toole said.

Johnson admits beating Karley in self-defense
(Does this little puppy look like he could hurt this big man? The man is around over 200 pounds and the poor puppy is not more than 40 or 50 pounds. Now who is likely to hurt who?)

Puppy Beating Case Handed Over to D.A.'s Office

KTLA News

November 12, 2008

RIVERSIDE -- The case involving animal cruelty allegations against Los Angeles County firefighter Glynn Johnson is now in the hands of the district attorney.

Investigators in Riverside County say they have collected all the necessary information and evidence relating to the deadly beating of a 6-month old German Shepherd mix.

Watch Interview With Johnson After Attack

The Riverside County D-A's office is now reviewing that information -- and will make the final decision on any criminal charges.

Johnson could potentially face a felony charge of animal cruelty.

He says the neighbors' dog nearly bit off his thumb and that he acted in self-defense last week.

But a witness says Johnson beat the puppy over the head with his fist and a large rock -- in some kind of violent outburst.

The detectives investigating this have found enough evidence to warrant prosecution and have turned their findings over to the Riverside DA. Something will be done about this creep, American Humane Society, John and Ken from KFI 640 am and other high profile people are watching and involved.

Thanks to everyone for their support of Karley and her family.

Hi Stephanie, did you go to the demonstration ? I couldn't that day. I am so glad that it looks like something will be done about this abuser. This man is insane and should be locked up with the mentally insane. If Karley's family wins, they should sue the hell out of this guy, maybe the fire department for hiring him and not looking at his mental stability and if he had problems with his own family, you know he's not right upstairs. What I don't get is why in the first place the neighbor handed Karley over to Johnson, Johnson had no business taking Karley and walking him home in the first place.

Dear Riverside County and Los Angeles Officials:

I write to urge rigorous prosecution in the case of Glynn Johnson, a Los
Angeles County Assistant Fire Chief on administrative leave for allegedly
killing his Riverside neighbor's shepherd mix puppy. Karley's critical
injuries led to her euthanasia. She was six months old.

Brandon Toole found his family's dog battered and bloody. Evidently, Karley
had dashed across several lawns, including Johnson's. Another neighbor,
Travis Staggs, had begun to lead Karley home when Johnson reportedly struck
her with a closed fist some 12 times and pounded her with an 11-inch rock.

Johnson claimed self-defense. More likely, Karley behaved as any puppy would
in response to harsh handling. In fact, Jeff Toole claims Johnson's thumb
was punctured as he busted Karley's jaw.

I suggest law enforcers and emergency responders learn to distinguish
anxiety, fear and protective canine behaviors (barking, growling, nipping)
from genuine hostility. All officers should be trained to neutralize animals
perceived as aggressive -- without resorting to lethal force.

I respectfully ask the Riverside County District Attorney to charge Johnson
with malicious and intentional injuring of an animal. Please seek maximum
felony penalties, including incarceration and a fine. If Johnson is
convicted, he should be barred from contact with animals and ordered to
undergo psychiatric evaluation and therapy.

I also encourage the Los Angeles Fire Chief to terminate Johnson's job, or
at the very least, suspend him until all legal actions conclude.

Violence against animals is a well-documented precursor to violence against
humans. The American Psychiatric Association lists animal cruelty as a key
trait for conduct disorders. ASPCA's Randall Lockwood, Ph.D. -- who aids
cruelty investigators, law enforcers and court officials -- identifies
animal abusers who project blame onto their victims as "repeat
offenders...resistant to intervention."

Please consider the brutality in Johnson's actions and proceed with criminal
charges. I look forward to any updates in this disturbing case.

Thank you,
