BOYCOTT CHINA AND SOUTH KOREA

SUPPORT THE MOON BEARS RESCUE EFFORTS!

This dog butcher gestures to stop photographing his operation at the Moran Market on May 19, 2001. To us, it seems obvious that dog meat purveyors know perfectly well that most of the world disapproves of their "business", and they don't want the evidence circulated.

Once the dog is selected, it is dragged away to its death. These animals are not stupid. They can sense danger and live with death all around them. Koreans believe that dogs who die painfully will release more adrenaline into their flesh, creating a more potent and flavorful meat. This accounts for the savagely cruel methods of slaughtering.

This dog is cruelly being dragged across a crowded Philippines street to his or her continued torture and death. Human beings will never know peace in this world until we learn to have compassion for every living being and stop atrocities like these. These are petitions that need our signatures 1. Boycott China...end it's animal terror : http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/395884823 2. Maggie Q speaks out for bears!

Dear Stephanie,

I have some exciting news to share with you! We’ve just launched a new video message starring Hollywood actress Maggie Q!

And equally exciting, the community service announcement – in which Maggie calls for an end to bear farming in Vietnam – has already been picked up by major TV channels for broadcast free-of-charge around the Asia-Pacific over the next 12 months. Lovely Maggie, who is our Moon Bear Rescue Ambassador for Vietnam, very kindly recorded the clip for us in Los Angeles during a break in her crazy schedule recently. Maggie visited our bear sanctuary near Hanoi earlier this year and it’s clear that she’s a committed animal- lover – as well as being a lot of fun! We’re so thrilled and proud to have her on board. Here’s what she had to say about Vietnam’s bile industry:

“I see bear bile farming as a stain on the history of this country, but one that can be wiped clean if we all work together to end this awful trade. The Vietnamese Government has come a long way in officially banning bear farming, but now it needs to go a step further by ensuring the ban is enforced.

“It’s not just the officials that need to act. We can all do our bit. Consumers of bear bile can switch to herbal or synthetic alternatives, teenagers can tell their parents about the cruelty involved in bear farming, and traditional medicine practitioners can refuse to sell products made from endangered species like moon bears.”

To watch Maggie’s video message, please click here.

A very big thank you to two generous Hong Kong media executives who donated their time and amazing talent to the project. The script was written by Charles Edwards of The Media Village and creative director Patrick Tom. Editing and post-production of the clip was also provided by The Media Village.

So far, the message is due to air on National Geographic, CNN and Discovery. These TV chan-nels have generously donated this air-time free-of-charge, and media company Mindshare very kindly negotiated and arranged it all – again, for free. This exposure is absolutely invaluable for us and the bears.

We couldn’t have asked for a better ambassador to represent our cause in Vietnam. Maggie’s intelligent, thoughtful approach is perfect for getting across the message that bear bile farming is not only terribly cruel, but also totally unnecessary and harming the country’s image.

Before I sign off, please can I say a huge “thank you” to you too, from all of us at Animals Asia, including of course our bears in Vietnam and China. It’s your continued support and faith that empowers us to do the work we do.

Bear hugs,

Jill Robinson MBE

UPDATE ON MOON BEARS:

MOON BEAR CHOSEN AS ONE OF ASIA'S BIG 5'S

Dear Linda,

We did it! The Asiatic black bear (moon bear) is now officially one of Asia’s Big 5! A huge thank you to all of you who voted for the moon bear in Asian Geographic magazine’s “Asia’s Big 5 Contest”.

The readers’ poll also chose the elephant to join the three iconic animals that Asian Geo had already included in the Big 5 – the tiger, orangutan and giant panda.

Of course, we already knew that the moon bear was special – now the rest of the world will as well. We’ll certainly spread this news far and wide and use the moon bears’ new status as another “weapon” in our struggle to end the shocking abuse of this intelligent, forgiving and highly endangered species.

Bear hugs,

Jill

H&M Joins the International Fur Free Retailer Program
Published 04/24/08

Swedish clothing company H&M is the newest retailer to join the international Fur Free Retailer Program.

With locations across the United States and more than 1,500 stores in 28 different countries, H&M has long been known for its affordable high quality fashions. H&M is also well known for its socially and environmentally responsible business practices — and these include not selling fur.

H&M spokesperson Lisa Sandberg told Born Free USA united with API that “by not selling fur, retailers can make a significant difference in the lives of millions of animals who suffer needlessly when killed solely for their fur.”

The Fur Free Retail Program represents an international effort to provide consumers with accurate information about a retailer's fur policy, allowing consumers to make an informed choice when shopping. To be recognized by the program, companies must commit, in writing, to a no-fur policy.

Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute collaborates with other organizations on this international program, and runs the program in the U.S. With its main headquarters in Sweden, H&M worked with our colleagues at Animal Rights Sweden to sign on to the program.

Born Free USA united with API is pleased to help promote this compassionate decision by encouraging our U.S. members and other conscientious shoppers to show their appreciation by shopping at one of the many H&M stores located in the United States.

For a list of additional Fur Free Retailers with stores in the U.S. visit www.furfreeshopping.com.

Experts turn out for farm animal welfare in China
World renowned animal welfare experts traveled to China to take part in a landmark conference on farm animal welfare last week.
WSPA, along with three other leading animal welfare organisations - Compassion in World Farming, the Humane Society International and the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals – joined forces to host the two-day conference.

Amy Firth, WSPA’s Farm Animal Welfare Programme Manager, described the standard of presentations and the interest in the conference as truly heartwarming.

“There is a real desire to improve farm animal welfare in China and WSPA will do all it can to assist with this,” she added.

Peter Davies, Director General of WSPA, said: “The commitment to and knowledge shared at this conference is another hugely significant step for farm animal welfare in China.”

More than 100 Chinese specialists attended the conference, including scientists, government officials and national media.

This landmark conference, which brought together leading experts from across China, as well as international speakers from six countries, will advance the move towards more humane and sustainable farm animal welfare in China.
