I know tihs guy that owns about 12 horses. They are so beautiful and great bloodlines, and they are extremely well trained horses.Ive never ridden a horse that well trained, but im worried about the way he breaks them and trains them to get that good.
He follows the ways they did it back in the olden days. When they flipped them on their backs and worked them to exhaustion.
Don't get me wrong they are very well taken care of.Pasture during the day and stalls with grain at night, up to date on vaccinations, it's just i watched him with one horse and he got on it and ran it in the arena for at least an hour non stop. The horse was foaming under the breast collar and saddle, and breathing really hard. And when he got off him the horse was shaking, he was so tired.
And when he starts them out if they arent listening right he will get a friend and put a bit in the horses mouth, put ties on their front feet, and twist the bit in their mouth and pull on the ties so the horse falls on it's side. Then they sit on him.Ive never heard of doing this before-but i guess it seems to work?idk. It's just how they do it.
So what do you say?Should i say somthing to him or just let him keep doing it to get the horses the way he does?

The way he is training the horse is a little bit of animal abuse dont you think. The only reason the horses are trained so well is because they are scared of him so they dont wont to do the wrong thing. Trust me I love horses and i know what i am talking about. I have one its a palomino ♥

I agree with you on the 'is this right or wrong' as i am only twelve , i clearly understand the need of disipline for horses and if you lett them do what the like then they will just be naughty like a clear exsample would be not to whip a horse loads of taps to go foward , give it one whipp , not to hard but hard engough . megan . this is me on a horse called busskii but he isnt mine yett , but i had to try sevrall times to get him over this jump !

I think part of why the horses are so good might be because of fear but there was alot of what i didnt mention. He does run them for hours and hours but while doing this he practices the turns, stops and goes and everyting else thats critical in training a horse. But like they say, groundwork is the foundation of breaking all horses, he does weeks and weeks of that too.He tries to spend as much time as he can with them. It's really not all about fear, it's about respect.Yeah he flips them on their backs and that does scare them but he's not that brutal through the whole thing. It's like to show the horse the power that the humans do have and that they arent afraid to use it.My personal oppinion, it's better to train the horses like this and start them this way with flipping them on their backs in order to let them know whats up.To ensure the safety of everybody that rides them and anybody thats around them period. And like i said not one of these horses has ever kicked or bucked while i or anybody else has been on them.So I've figured it out in the past couple of days and I think it's ok.It's not the kindest way to train and break a horse but It's not completly brutaal as to some people that do it COMPLETLY out of fear.He gains the horses trust after awhile. They are good horses and good people that work with them.

In my experience, some cowboys and amish do it this way. they do not have time nor money to 'baby' the horses. they have to get it done, and they have to get it done NOW.

if yyu ever watch monty roberts, the 'horse whisperer', he does a 'gentler' version of this: he 'dogs' the horse non-stop, NON STOP, til he wears the horse DOWN. I saw him do this on PBS, where he took a wild mustang from the range, and just STAYED with the horse, on his horse NON STOP...day and nite, nite and day, he had to have his assistant come out several times with a new mount, to switch to a fresh horse. Monty slept in that saddle, ate grub from his saddle bag and drank from his canteen.

as a horse person, it was very very painful for me to watch that wild horse's spirit slowly ebb away, until there was no 'WILD' left to him...there was just a poor sweet once-wild, now-shattered totally exhausted horse.

it was at that point, for me, as a horse trainer, that I quit following the monty roberts 'horse whisper' way.

he was doing basicly, the way i saw it, just what the rough riders do: breaking the horse's spirit.

I don't like to see horses 'broke' this way, I like to see them 'gentled', not 'broke'.
unfortunately, not too many folks have the time nor money to do that.

while mr. cowboy of the year hasn't scored any points with us folk who believe in the 'old' ways of REAL Horse Whispering (Celtic Irish style), his horses seem to be ok.
no body has ended up with a broken neck, whip lash wounds, or permanent scars.

and ...they are now 'bomb proof'.

it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it, I suppose.

pity.

'gentling' a horse takes months and months; 'breaking' a horse takes 21 days, tops.

he probably can't afford that sort of time, as he is losing money that way, and sadly: it is an Equine INDUSTRY.

i have been riding for 8 years now and i dont think that what he is doing is right

Yeah same here. In my opinion no horse should be whipped. I agree more with Monty Roberts method. Yes, he does tire them out but the horses have signs that they want to be with him. So he doesn't really tire them out like that guy that breaks them.

I think what he is doing is wrong and cruel. Usually horses who get that kind of treatment are timid and don't trust humans for the rest of their lives. Some horses get vicious from bad treatment. I have seen this many times with horses. I also know some people are stubborn and won't listen to anyone's advice. You must talk to him, but have well supported information. This type of training DOES NOT work. It breaks the spirit of the horse and does not have the will to live anymore. So you MUST act urgently before he destroys any more horses.

But the thing is he is not at all an abusive owner. When you go out in the pasture all the horses are out there and when one whinnies when it see's you they all come running.Even if you dont have anything to feed them they will all follow you and just want to be around you. These horses are so trusting of people. And when he breaks them their spirits are never broken. You can tell. They are amazing horses and he trains them so well. They are in no way hurt or "Tortured"
I asked before if it was right or wrong what he was doing nd i think i understand now.I am not saying it's right but i believe if they are honestly not being hurt and abused they are fine. I know it is not right to hurt a horse but i dont think he is.He is getting respect and teaching them what they need to do to be a good horse. So thats just my opinion.

Yes, I've seen that and don't agree but this is a traditional way to break horses, WHY it is called breaking. Saying anything will get one of two responses depending on how you do it. If you ask questions he may be willing to explain what he is doing and you can ask question that may lead him to think more about what his is doing. Probably not, but you may understand more. Or if you criticize him he will tell you that you don't know anything, you shouldn't butt your nose into things you don't understand and to go away. Not the reaction you want I' sure.

I think it goes to the fundamental relationship one has with horses. If the first thing you feel about your horse is that you own it, it is yours and you have the right to do what you want, then it is not about a partnership between the owner and the horse as the owner/trainer sees the horse as an outcome of his skills. As you said, you have never ridden a better trained horse so it obviously works and the horses are well cared for and so on. He probably won't change because the results of what he does are as good as they are so his approach is justified. He sees a little pain at the beginning justifies the training in the end.

I'm on the partner side of the equation and can't imagine throwing a horse but it's better than the beatings I've seen novice riders give their horses when they don't do what the rider wants.

I think its wrong. He is going to train the horse not in the real sense. He is trying to scare the sweet horse. We have to take care of the animals whether that is horse, goat or even a dog.
