My opinion: It is needed. What must happen is that it is restored as an option but that the transportation of horses for slaughter must be regulated with greater vigor. The horror of slaughter isn't that they are killed and eaten but that they are so mistreated in the process.

The word SLAUGHTER says it all. It is a terrible thing whether we need it or not. They could use better methods of putting them down rather then beating them practically to death and sometimes all the way to death. Just my opinion but I think it should be stopped, discontinued, NO MORE!

i totally agree with lacey a responsible owner would put the horse down or donate it to therapeutic centers that need the help .....SLAUGHTER is disgusting and needs to be stopped the united states doesn't eat horse meat so why dont we just stop it already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Horses that are sent to slaughter go days maybe even weeks without food or water. Here is how i see slaughter, imagine your son or daughter had to go through what those horses do, being beatin and abused, most of them are practicly dead by the time they get there. It should be stopped. Thats my opinion on slaughter.

Horse slaughters stupid because i you can do anything with a horse if your patient i think. So then theres no point getting rid of a poor horse that can be good use to some one . ;) Is there ?

I am completely and wholly against the slaughter of horses. There need to be better population controls; and quite honestly, in today's world where there aren't that many horses produced anymore, breeders should know better and only produce what they will see through to the end.

Here is something that is going on today, right here in the US:

http://www.miamiherald.com/459/story/1181376.html

the article is about horses being killed in the Miami Dade area; there is a theory that they are being slaughtered for meat and that its being sold on the black market.

Yes, horse slaughter is not a solution. I think we "finally" need to come up with a quick, easy solution for sterilization of horses. We also need to keep fighting congress for passing laws. It will just continue and we can just keep talking about it! We need to do something now!!

I have heard many people say that stopping horse slaughter will create many more unwanted (and hence neglected) horses. I don't agree at all. Abolishing horse slaughter may create more unwanted horses in the short term, but long term it will put horses in the hands of people who can afford to humanely euthanize their horses when the time comes. It will also cut down on excessive breeding. Why do we have so many unwanted horses anyway? If people can't afford to care for a horse, and that means all the way to the end, then they should not own them. Horses are expensive, time consuming, and take a real commitment.

The cruelty is horrible, that is why I think banning it will make it worse. Nothing is more cruel than this underground slaughter market that is now cropping up.
I'm not naive about regulation, the government doesn't know best nor will it protect from these inhumane standards- but better to have this open to the light then what we will have now that slaughter is banned. A feel good thing on its face but does it solve any problems or make them worse?

I don't know maybe it helps solve the problem by making this a criminal activity so there are either less slaughters or more criminals but I'm not sure there is any way to address the inhumanity since people who do this, lets face it, are sick and/or already desensitized. I don't know the answer I just think a ban might not be it. If I did, there would be no debate. None at all. Case would be closed. I am not comfortable however with no outlet for oversupply. Expecting humane solutions from the horse industry and so many horse owners is....well, just look at the world or racing and high money breeding.
Show me a model that works and I'll go with it in a heartbeat.
