“Behavior is our route to affinity with animals. Behavior is both the expression and the means to improve the welfare of animals in our lives.” - Dr. Jennifer Sobie

"I was drawn to the field of animal behavior because companion animals have brought me endless joy and fascination since early childhood. Studying the science of behavior analysis unravels much of the mystery of their behavior and helps us forge respectful, humane and mutually enjoyable human-animal relationships based on who they really are rather than who we think they are." - Carmen Buitrago, MSc, CPDT

"I find studying and modifying animal behavior both fascinating and highly rewarding. It's especially fulfilling to be able to help improve the relationships between people and their pets." - Kristen Collins, CPDT

i am new to this live chat thing, i HOPE i am doing it right.. but i have a question about my cat.

Fuffooey is a 1 year old cat who lives in a house with her sister, mother and our first cat, Tweek. She was born in this house and is Spayed and fully up to date on all shots. She was given a clean bill of health at our last vet appointment 2 weeks ago.

For the last 4-5 months she has been VERY talkative. She will literally walk around making odd sounds like MrrrrRRR, bbrrrrrr, Brrreow, I guess it seems weird to type it all out. but its NOT a basic MEOWING sound.

She does it MOSTLY at night when she is walking about, and usually when she is talking like that, she does it with a toy in her mouth, or when she is trying to attack a toy. And she ALWAYS brings us the toys in bed. I wake up with a pile of them by my head.

So why does she do this? Is it normal. She is not in any pain at all, so walking and pouncing does not hurt her.

I need advice on my dog and her anxiety problem...she totally gets freaked out when a fly comes into the house and buzzes throughout the entire home. It is not all types of flies, just the really huge ones that I know as "horse flies". The big gigantic ones with furry bodies and green heads that sound like an electric razor. They absoblutely drive her insane. She shakes uncontrollably and is constistantly whipping her head around trying to see where it is flying. She tries to hide under open cabinets, behind the toilet (she is not a small dog either) under my feet, the closets or any tucked away place where the fly will not buzz past her....what can I do to calm her other than try and keep the flying bandits from coming inside.

I have a great Dane shar pei mix. He's bout a year old now BUT SO full of energy. I am unable to take him for walks so he is VERY uncontrolable. He has a choker and he doesn't get much slack on the leash. He pulls me everywhere. I have tired anti-pull harnesses and muzzles still isn't helping. He has good manners jus on the leash he is so horrible. I really would like to get him out n walk him but its so hard and embrassing taking him. What should I do?

Our puppy who is just 25 weeks today and no longer has her baby teeth so we can't blame it on teething, is still quite bitey with us. Some of it is just mouthing, which I don't mind, but she is still doing the "play biting" which can hurt. She is now 44 lbs. and since we got her from a rescue group aren't sure what breeds, best guess is lab/shepherd/hound/retriever. If someone comes into our yard while she is outside, she will bark, her hair raises and will either go under the deck & contine barking from there or run to the door to go back in the house.

My 6 year old rescue lab is terrified of thunder. She will hide and shake until long after the storm has passed. as we enter another season of thunderstorms in the east, how can I help her?
Carolyn Comment by Carolyn on April 26, 2008 at 11:58am
My Lab caught and ate a rabbit yesterday. I tried to pull it out of her mouth and only part of it came out. I think she ate the head and half the body. It was so disgusting. Will she get sick? Should I call the vet?

I replaced 3 throw rugs in mt bathroom a month ago and my cat pees on the new rugs. I've tried Feliway spray, etc, and I can't get her to stop. Her litterbox is in the bathroom and she pees and poops in the box, but clearly, she hates the new rugs. I've had to resort to underpads on the rugs to catch the pee, but it's becomming impractical. Any advice?
