I live in S C in a small rural town. The shelter has always had a scary reputation. The shelter is reluctant to be open minded to volunteers and a new shelter being built as we speak. How do u change the minds of administration that shelters need volunteers to help socialize dogs and cats for the adoption program they are to implement? There is no current Adoption program- so u know what happens to the animals there.

In many areas of the country shelters are totally run and operated by city /county government, get together with local humane groups to put your cause foward before local council meetings first, try this first sometimes when the goverment is allowed to see the savings in manpower allocation volunteers allow they jump at the chance.Just dont expect the shelter to change its kill/nokill policy.Be thankfull if you can help pets get a home.

Once again, Ken L. gives some great advice...the first step would be to get in front of the city councils and other local gov't agencies in your area.

I and a local rescue g'p have already done so! I think they are worried vols will find out how the shelter is run and the treat't of the animals which the town county knows is horrible!

HI Ken, we have gone to Council and the Co Admin/ given examples of nearby small shelters functioning w/ Vols. They are worried about liability and I think what vols may find out about the running of the shelter!
