I have always wanted to volunteer, but hesitant because I've been told that you see the good and bad - the bad being euthanizing. I don't think I could handle being in an environment where animals are 'put-down'. Have I been misinformed or can anyone provide some advice on what I can do?

I too have that concern and I will tell you what I was told - start with a no kill shelter. :)

Thanks PJ for weighing in! PJ is correct, not all shelters have to euthanize adoptable animals. Definitely ask about the shelters policy.

Here is a link that may help you find additional shelters in your area.

I started out volunteering in a "no-kill" shelter, but realized the animals there were safe. I started devoting my time to the county shelter, trying to get those pets adopted. I now find that my calling is with the county shelter since they do live on a time limit. I see it as my mission to make their time there as comfortable as possible by providing walks, treats, toys and lots of belly rubs.

Thank you - to everyone that replied to this - and especially for reminding me that I should be worrying about the animals that are not safe. I'll start with a 'no-kill' shelter and go from there.

Hi Leila,
That is exactly what my best friend told me. I told her I had applied at the kill shelter and did not know why but felt I had to do that but was not sure I could handle it. She said it is because they need my voice and help. The other ones are out of harm's way. No one called which has bothered me a great deal. I know I have no experience but I make up for that in enthusiasm and passion. I really want to help them.

I know at our local shelter that they are so busy and understaffed that phone calls are something that seem to get pushed aside while other fires are being put out. Just show up and say "put me to work" and I know they will appreciate it.

I agree about kindness and dignity, and the lack of it especially during transport. I would hope to see that dignity upheld, but many horse lovers would not have the ability to work that job due to the nature, and so many times people working at sla…
