Hi, last year when he was about 6 months we didn't do the tree but, this year Max is 1 1/2 years and we are putting up a tree. It's a 4 ft. artificial one but, I'm not sure how he will react. How do I discourage him from trying to climb it for instance? Or keep him out of the presents. He is a chewer. Also, I know Poinsettia plants are poisenous but, what else should I be aware of at Christmas time? Thanks so much!

Hi Dikki,

While I am not a behavior expert by any means, I can tell you from personal experience what has worked for my cats.

First, I did my best to avoid letting my cat (and dogs) from gaining access to the room where my tree was, unless I could supervise them directly. That way, I could take advantage of the opportunity of catching them in the act of coming into contact with the tree, telling my dogs "leave it" (a command they know well). With my cat, I would clap my hands loudly and say "no" firmly (you can use a can of coins, beans or another similar noisemaker as well). These techniques worked well for my pets, so you might consider trying them. Good luck to you!

Thank you so much. I live in a moble home so it's impossible to keep Max out of the living room but, he minds pretty well so I will try your suggestions should the need arise. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Dikkki,

Poinsettias are not as poisonous as their reputation. They can cause vomiting and diarrhea but do not cause life-threatening problems.

Most of the Christmas plants, like mistletoe, holly, Christmas cacti, also are likely to cause a digestive upset but nothing serious. Also, some animals may drink the water from the Christmas tree base -- this can cause an upset stomach to pine sap from the tree or if there is bacteria growing in the water.

Thank you Eric. I appreciate your insight on the plants. At least the tree is artificial so we won't have to worry about tree water. Have a great Thanksgiving!

You need all the sourpusses you can get if you want money from them. Any fundraiser knows this. And any good fund raiser realizes that if you isolate anyone, even the difficult ones - you will never get a dime. I've had the most difficult of people…
