My cats has taken to eating fresh pine needles off the branch of a live tree. Is there any danger in this? Perhaps due to the sharp nature of the needles, or even perhaps due to toxins?
Pine trees (Pinus species) contain essential oils which can cause vomiting and diarrhea; the sharp needles can cause irritation to the mouth and gastrointestinal tract as well. Therefore, it's a good idea to discourage your cats from nibbling on your pine tree.
