Hi I rescued a Great Pyreness about a month ago.
She has the run of 2 acres but is brought indoors at night.
Lately I noticed the tell tale signs of fleas on her even though she is up to date on her Advantix.
Really concerned with her coat and the thickness that it might not be effective enough.
Was wondering if there were any herbal or any tell tale remedies that may work...
I have heard a few horror stories about some flea shampoos and would like to find something natural for her coat.
If there are any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Yay you for having a Grt Pyr! Soooooo comforting and loving as an animal companion! I hope you're familiar with her unique protective behavior so that you don't think she's being rude to your guests when she does exactly what she should do, like get between you and them.

Regarding the fleas: I'm not helpful. I've struggled with finding natural repellents also, without real luck. As long as she's receiving her monthly heartworm pill and you're doing what you are able to protect her from massive flea investation, you might just be stuck with her having a bit of fleas. Keep in mind that the fleas themselves don't cause her all that much annoyance; it's the heartworm that they could give her if she gets behind on her pills that's the real issue for HER.

For your house? I recommend the boring old Hartz carpet sprinkle stuff. For yourself? DEET, if you trust it.

So sorry I haven't found anything herbal or natural that seems to help, and I have definitely tried. I'll let you know if I find something.

Thank you for trying to help.
Yeah..She truly has every aspect of the Pyr breed. I find myself explaining alot to friends and family her characteristics. I am trying to keep her as true to her breed and nature as possible.
And everyday I hunt the online shelters looking for another Pyr to rescue.
we rescued her a few hours before she was to be euthanized and I fear that a lot of them are due to their size and that they arent the all the time cuddly polar bear. That their instinctive nature is a strong working breed and they need to exercise that.
But I do thank you again and will I guess like you said just keep her up to date and hope for the best.

Hi Erin,
I wanted to let you know that I have recently found something natural that works for fleas mosquitos and ticks and I also found that it repels gnats and flies. Its called Seargents natural defense. you can find it at walmart for around 7 bucks. It has a citrusy vanilla and ginger smell its strong at first but it also works as a great coat deodorant.
I talked to a woman that takes all her pets to a holistic vet and she had told me about it..It works awesome.
I just wanted to share.

Take care,

Beth
