I would like to get pointers and advice on how to introduce my new puppy to my current husky. My current and 1st Husky, William, will be 14 yrs old in Feb 2010, and has lived his life in my large, fenced in, shady back yard with no problems. I got him at 8 weeks when I also had a 3 yr old female chow. They have both been outside dogs. William has been alone for six years after the chow passed away with no problems.
The chow accepted William with no problems although she was jealous of him getting affection from me when he got older. She never tried to hurt him, although I did keep him in a small chain link pen when I wasn't watching them until I felt that she wouldn't hurt him, because I know that chows can be aggressive. I could leave them alone all of the time after about a week.
I will be getting the puppy in 4 days, picture is on my profile, and would like any tips or pointers that anyone could give me. My dog hasn't been aggressive towards other dogs except when a little pekinese ran up to him barking when I was walking with him in the neighborhood. At first Will got down on his front paws like he wanted to play and the dog kept barking and trying to bite him then Will picked the dog up in his mouth. Will was on a leash on the other side of the street when the pekinese was outside using the bathroom with no leash and it got away from its owner when she turned her back.. I eventually make Will let go, and the dog didn't appear to be harmed.
I just learned that Will has terminal cancer and is expected to live 3 mths to one year. Currently he seems fine, and still wants to go on his 2 mile walk and the vet recommends it. The only cure is to have the leg amputated, and the vet didn't recommend that at his age. She said that I would eventually notice that the skin on the wrist would start to "break open" , but right now you can't tell that anything is wrong. I can't even detect the lump.
Also, mosquitoes are a big problem here in GA, and I was wondering about when to start heart worm prevention for the puppy and what type to use. i think that you can start it ast 7 weeks. I will ask the vet, but I just wanted to get some advice here also. The mosquitoes should be getting better now that it is getting colder.
I gave Will the heart worm prevention monthly for several years, but stopped using it. As a result, the vet just told me that he has heart worms. Since I know that there must be mosquitoes in the area that cause heart worrms, I am very worried about the puppy getting bitten by one of them. The breeder lives in South Carolina and says that she has never had problems with mosquitoes.
Thank you.
