please not ,if you use the chips which are great if the pet is lost and they check for it,but they do not in many places and if they do not have your pet for lab test use.I'am all for them but in the cases mentioned here and in my case of being in oklahoma where pets are released by law to test labs from the pound etc, and 2 other states as well, the chip will not matter. But if a pet has a tattoo it is not legal to use them in test labs but if they are tatooed on a limb or such the labs just cut it away so no one knows,if you do use a tattoo besure it is on the trunk of the pet, stomach or such.I would opp for both tattoo and chip if I could.Only wanted folk to know about this ,I wish I had sooner. love ,jc

Eli had been chipped by the breeder using AVID ( whom I've used in the past ) But when we took him in to our vet for his wellness exam In was exterely difficult to find . We eventually had another chip from Home Again put in and it shows up fine the other chip has stopped registering completely .

We have a question to ask. What company does every one in the group use and do you like the way it works? The reason we are asking is because I have always used Avid chips in our dogs and pups we sell. We liked the way the system worked with having a 3 party notify system of: pet owner, the vet who implanted, and the breeder or person who had the chip implanted. I felt this was the safest and best for the pups we sell in the event the new owner doesn't follow through with the contract demands set forth when they purchase one of our pups so that our vet and me are notified if the dog gets lost/found or picked up by Animal Control for any reason. Our pups have over 300 CH Show dogs in their lineage and a lot of time, work, love and expense goes into our litter each year and WE do not want them to not be properly cared for once they leave our home. I do not just hand the buyers the contract to read for themselves (at some time when they want) but I verbally go over all of the Requirements that we ask to be met for purchasing one of our pups which includes their AKC and Microchip registrations as well as Yearly shots, feeding, training, etc. In July of this year, we recieved a call from our vet who was notified by the chip company and Animal Control in a neighboring state about a pup from our 2007 litter that had been picked up and the scanning and microchip was the only thing that saved the dog from being "gased" the same day it was picked up in Pa. The buyers had never registered the chip nor AKC papers in their name and info. I came to find out that all the info I had for the couple that I had given the A.C. man was no longer valid because the couple had been fore-closed on and was living in a trailer and had left the dog with an elderly uncle to care for which is where she had jumped the fence from and took off that ended in her getting picked up by Animal Control. All of these conditions were breaking the sales contract that was signed by the buyers. If for ANY reason they could not provide the dog the required conditions of care asked of them, they were to contact me and return the dog to us and it was NOT to be passed off on any one else, taken to A.C., pound or shelter. The state of Pa. does NOT handle Animal Control the same way as other states- theirs is handeled by private animal exterminators and there is no re-adopt out system. If there is no chip or tags- the animal is gased the same day. Unfortunately this pup was turned back over (after paying the pound fee and license fee) to the young man who dumped it back on the elderly uncle's house again. Upon investigation that day, we found the dog was very under weight, had never had any puppy shots after leaving me, and is not being properly cared for. We have NO way of contacting the people because the info he gave Animal Control to get the dog back is also incorrect info. So we are stuck in a wait it out game for the dog to get picked up again and us contacted at which point we will go and retrieve her. This year our vet switched the chips he implants to ones made by Bayer for a company called Pet Link. They do NOT handle the verifying aspect the same way so if the buyers do not register the chip- the dog is remaining Unprotected from this type of situation. Matter fact, 3 buyers notified me that when they took the pup for shots and the vets tried to scan the chips, their scanners did NOT pick up the chip and they had to travel some distance to get a place with a scanner that did. This does NOT make me happy being this chip cost more and does NOT protect these precious puppies.

I actually have something to add here - before anyone adds anything... lol.

My cat is microchipped AND registered online via Home Again - a popular microchipping company.
I also registered with them so they can send me emails when pets are lost in my area so I can keep my eyes out.
However... people tend to NOT register their animal online, and only go thru the company when he/she gets lost. This means, I get an email that says: URGENT! There's a lost pet in your area!.. so I think... 'great... let me check his/her description, where he/she was lost, and what he/she looks like... and I'll keep my eyes out.
Then I open it to a description of.

Species: Cat
Color: Tabby
Other color: n/a
Age: 1 yr
Name: Fluffy

(that's an example)

Well frankly... do they KNOW how many tabbies are wandering the streets in just about every town.

THen, it gives you a link to open so you can view a picture of the pet, and of course... like clockwork... nine times out of ten there is no picture -- so all I have to go on is -- it's a tabby.

So lets say I come across a tabby wandering around the same place where Fluffy got lost. Now. I can't be entirely sure this is the right cat - because not everyone has their pet ID tag on their animal (stupid, I know, but absolutely true... especially for cats), nor do they have the Home Again ID tag (which is used to make a rescures life easier so they don't have to take them all the way back to the shelter to check the chip - they can just read it on the ID tag and call the company - find the owner and give it back.) so here I am petting a cat that could potentially be someone elses animal, all the while thinking it could be Fluffy.

I think people need to understand that microchipping your animal isn't really enough - you have to get online and register through the agency that manufactures the chip; and if they don't provide that service, then I would find another agency that does...
Be a little more proactive than just shoving a chip in your animal and thinking everything will be okay - because honestly, they don't always check those... and sometimes... even if your pet has a chip in it, it wont always scane right, either.
