Though I am far from a professional trainer, I know consistancy is the key and the whole family should be involved. The earlier the better. If you can't enroll her in a local "puppy class" such as at local pet supply store or sometimes vets hold them (good for socialization) you could go to a private trainer. There are also plenty of books out there. I took Brutus to a private trainer 1 day a week for 8 weeks to get an idea, though I have had several dogs before and thought paying for training was bogus...these lessons actually helped. I have been taking my Rottie to classes at a local pet supply store has been great socialization and have learned alot. You should spend 30 min a day, they lose focus after that. Also it is good to give them alot to do so they dont get bored.....that's when trouble can happen :)

We adopted our newfie Ruby Belle Tuesday at the Valdez Animal shelter in Alaska she was 7 weeks old and I tell you I love her so much.. I call her my pony because she is so huge, she is a gentle giant loves the kids very affectionate with us. I need help with training.

I have a newf and adore him. I will one day rescue one. I have had this guy from 10 weeks. Please research and visit with them before deciding. I have so many people think they are cool and want one. They get out of their cars to see if they can pet him. I warn right away they he will drool on you, they say they dont mind and as soon as he does it or if he shakes his head and flings it, they act all appauled and back away...it is bad enough they shed a lot, but you have to deal with slobber, so if you are a neat freak, etc forget it, because this is how they end up being banned to the garage or basement or tied outside and I hate that! They are expensive to care for and take up space, and need LOTS of brushing. Just throwing that info out there. He is my life though, so I dont mind.

i dont have a newfi, and i am quite content with my current dogbreed of choice, thanks, but i do like them. there used to be one living in the house behind mine named george. he was sweet, but he died and his owner died soon after. one of the owners relatives moved in and got george jr, who i should probably visit in a while...

Here is the article I was referring to. Great information - there should be one for every breed. BTW- we are on the waiting list for a rescue but am getting very tired of....waiting.

I have been researching newfies - I am dying to get one. Have been talking to a lot of breeders so I feel like I am informed and after reading "Don't get a newfie" and still wanting one I think we are ready. Just want to make sure we get one from a reputable breeder.

Hey am I the only one with a Newfoundland? Does anyone even know someone with one? We could compare stories. My girl is a 160 lb baby, that is kept in line by an 11 lb Shih Tzu.

I have a big beautiful Newfi named Sophia. She just turned 2 yrs. old 12-19-08. She is still very much a baby. You can see her in my photos. I live in Md. and my husband had her flown in from Iowa for me. Her most recent type of fun is catching mice. I have a photo of her with a mouse in her mouth that I will download soon. She can carry a mouse in her mouth without hurting it. So imagine a 160 lb mouse catcher.

That isn't fair at all.... in my tiny town of 300 people they tried to make strict laws on how you must restrain a pit.. we own two.. the law said you must keep them on a 3 foot long chain, not a rope, when they were off your property (no leash law…

I wouldn't know from personal experience that she won't be but in my opinion very good socialization and as I would put it "extensive doggy training boot camp" at an early age will be the best to prevent any issues and at any sign of aggression corr…
