I'm not sure if you've heard, but there's a movement of citizens inspired by the presidential campaign who are now submitting ideas for how they think the Obama Administration should change America. It's called "Ideas for Change in America."

One idea is titled: Pass the Puppy Uniform Protection Statute to Help Stop Puppy Mills. I thought you might be interested in getting involved and recommend you check it out. You can read more and vote for the idea by clicking the following link:

http://www.change.org/ideas/view/pass_the_puppy_uniform_protection_statute_to_help_stop_puppy_mills

The top 10 ideas are going to be presented to the Obama Administration on Inauguration Day and will be supported by a national lobbying campaign run by Change.org, MySpace, and more than a dozen leading nonprofits after the Inauguration. So each idea has a real chance at becoming policy.

Please help this is currently in 26th place and needs over 800 or more votes.

I look forward to hearing what you think,

LJ

I believe our Lexie was from a breeder who had alot of dogs breeding. We never knew her name, she was a aquintance of Ma, who called us one day and asked if we wanted...a Powder Puff Chinese Crested female. According to the woman we could have her and she would give us papers later. It was christmas time and of course we said yes...Well Lexie is beautiful!!! She looks like a Teddy Bear when sitting or standing a certain way. 3yrs later, no woman, no papers, nothing. Lexie we noticed had an agressive side with our Sweet Pea (chi chi) I mean vicious. So we kept all eyes on them always. Lexie then got sick..had discharge coming from her vagina..we took her to the vet, and we had her fixed, and doctored. He said her internal organs look like they had alot of trauma in them, like she had been kicked around!!! We noticed before that that Lexie had what we call a slow not so there way of thinking. We thought she was just clowning around. Seems she is slow. My thinking on this...WE LOVE HER, NO MATTER, she is a special needs child, and this woman probably had inbreeds, and was a mill, and saw she couldnt sell Lexie. My heart goes out to Lexie for the possible Trauma she went through.

PUPPY MILLS WILL ALWAYS EXIST UNLESS STATE'S BEGIN TO LEGISLATE CONROL AND RESTRICTIONS ON THESE OPERATIONS WHICH MAKE IT VERY DIFFICULT TO AFFORD MASS BREEDING. I AM FROM PENNSYLVANIA WHERE, AS I'M SURE MOST OF YOU KNOW, THE HOUSE JUST PASSED A LONG NEEDED PIECE OF LEGISLATION MANDATING AT LEAST MINIMUM STANDARDS OF CARE FOR BREEDING FACILITIES. IT IS AN UPHILL BATTLE TO BAN PUPPY MILLS ALTOGETHER ( AT LEAST IN MY STATE WHICH AS YOU ALSO KNOW IS THE PUPPY MILL CAPITAL OF THE EAST...I HATE TO SAY IT, BUT THE WORST OFFENDERS SEEM TO BE THOSE IN THE AMISH COMMUNITY) SO THIS LEGISLATION WILL MANDATE VET CARE, FOOD , WATER, MINIMUM SPACE ETC. I SUPPOSE THE LEGISTALTORS HAVE TO BALANCE THE ANIMAL WELFARE ISSUES WITH WHAT THEY THINK THEY CAN REASONABLE ENFORCE....IN OTHER WORD, YOU CAN MAKE ALL THE LAWS AND REGULATIONS YOU WANT, BUT IF THEY ARE NOT FULLY ENFORCED, WHAT'S THE POINT? CERTAINLY, WE ALL AGREE THAT THE VERY CONCEPT OF A PUPPY MILL IS WRONG. I BELEIVE OUR EFFORTS ARE BEST DIRECTED TOWARD RESEARCHING AND MONITORING PENDING LEGISLATION, CONTACTING OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS,MAKING OTHERS AWARE OF IT, SO THEY TOO CAN CONTACT THEIR CONGRESSMAN OR SENATOR, WRITE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ( I HAVE DONE THIS TWICE PRIOR TO HOUSE BILLS BEING VOTED ON AND TWICE MY LETTERS WERE PUBLISHED. ( BTW, I HAVE COPIES OF THOSE LETTERS IF ANYONE SHOULD NEED A SAMPLE TO LOOK AT). GO TO THE HSUS SITE, CLICK ON LEGISLATION, FIND YOUR STATE, AND THE SITE WILL GIVE YOU A LIST OF ALL THE PROPOSED AND PENDING LEGISLATION. IT IS A VALUABLE RESOURCE. ADDITIONALLY, I SEE A LOT OF FOLKS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD WHO HAVE DOGS. I MADE A COPY OF MY LETTER TO THE EDITOR, HAND WROTE THE NAME/NUMBER OF OUR STATE REP. ON IT AND PERSONALLY WENT TO EACH HOUSE I KNEW HAD DOGS AND HANDED IT OUT ASKING THEM TO CALL. THINGS LIKE THIS ARE SMALL, BUT IF ALL OF US CHATTING HERE COULD DO JUST A LITTLE BIT WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTS ITSELF, IT WOULD ADD UP TO BIG CHANGES NATIONALLY. SO LET'S CHAT HERE AND INSPIRE EACH OTHER WITH THOUGHTS, PLANS AND IDEAS AS TO HOW WE CAN PUT THESE PUPPY MILL BASTARDS OUT OF BUSINESS ONCE AND FOR ALL.

I completely agree with Deb!! I think breeders in general are irresponsible and unecessary.

first off don't buy puppies over the internet. You never know what you are going to get really. You could get a picture of the perfect puppy and recieve something that is not the picture of health you had hoped for. The puppy mill our rescue group helped bust was an internet puppy broker. She was breeding in the name of God and all of his glory...meanwhile her puppies were being born and living in horrible manners. You ALWAYS personally go to where you are buying the puppy from. And those "hybrid" mixes like puggles, poochis, etc are fastly climbing the popularity charts and driving puppymills from purebreds to hybrids.

I know it will never happen, however wouldn't it be nice, but change pet stores policies to spay/neuter all pups prior to sale of the animal...to prevent people to take beloved fluffy home and start their own puppy mill or fast cash scheme. Stop the bad genetics and problems from puppy mills from spreading. Like responsible breeders sell their puppies on spay/neuter contracts (or spay/neuter prior to sale).

Don't mind my rant but I am so TIRED of reading posts about how people still buy dogs from pet stores and then they are thrown for a loop with all the medical problems that soon face them - I work in an animal shelter in Long Island where I am up to my eyeballs in teacup and small dogs that have skin allergies, who develop sickness that more likely then not stem from poor breeding, inbreeding and over breeding. What's worse is these people drop them off at shelters hoping someone else will foot the medical bill and find them a better home. People, you read enough blogs, watch enough tv to know that when you buy a puppy in a petstore - 99.9 percent of the time it's coming for a puppy mill - you don't know anything about the history of the animal and most places are quick to take your money but fall short on the health guarantee. Let's not get it twisted that puppies can be VERY expensive - you'd figure that if you were gonna front a couple of hundred dollars for an animal you will be responsible for the next 10 + yrs you'd do your homework and invest in something that will bring joy into your life. not something that you'll be nursing back to health from the start. Plus, pets will cost you money at some point; wheither it be the food you buy, the s/n you do, as it ages the medical tests - if you don't want to spend money then don't get an animal and stop dumping your sick dogs on overworked and overcrowded shelters!
