How are puppy sales/ dog regulation handled in other countries?
I've traveled central Europe and can't think of a single puppy store I've ever run into!
I don't know, but don't even ask about China...(shudder!) they have egregious human and animal rights records, and they don't even tell you what happens over there most of the time...
I think most consumers in other countries are reluctant to pay the high prices that pet stores charge for puppies so there is no incentive for people to mass produce dogs in Europe. Interestingly, many Eastern European countries are exporting puppies to the US where disreputable sellers are selling the dogs over the Internet. There has been an amendment to the Farm Bill to prohibit the importation of dogs under 6 months of age for the purposes of resale. We are hoping this amendment will pass. We have had many complaints about sick dogs bought over the Internet that originated from Russia, Ukraine and and former Soviet countries.
Aren't there strict regulation for the importation of live animals from other countries - for fear of diseases (mad cow, avian flu, ect.)? From a public health prospective at the very least I would hope regulators fix this loophole!
