Spay and Neuter!

This is a place were members can exchange information on several things. One would be how to obtain vouchers for low cost spay and neuters as well as other resources your community may offer. Another would be information about making law to mandate..

We can all help solve the overpopulation problem!

I would love for this to be a place where we can exchange ideas on how to create laws for our states or even cities to mandate animals being spayed and neutered. Information about local and state officials that need to be written to, media coverage, things like that. This is a cause that I strongly believe in. And I am determined to fix this problem, no matter how long it takes.

All animals should be mandated to be spayed or neutered. IF an animal is AKC registered and acknowledged, this is important because Pit Bulls are NOT, then they can pay a large fee to be excluded from the mandate. The fee would be for some kind of license that states the dogs (or cats) paper work and information, this license would also have a limit on the amount of times a Bitch could have puppies over maybe a 5 yr period before the license would need to be renewed (similar for cats as well). The money for the license would go to funding an Animal Law Enforcement Team that would check on the licensed dogs and cats to make sure they were properly confined to the owners property and that the breeding restrictions were being met. That is my idea for a perfect world and something I am working on for my state. I think it is MORE than fair. Overpopulation has to come to a stop, and somewhere along the way people are going to disagree or get their feelings hurt, but you can't please everyone all the time. We have to make a change. We need a nation wide mandate but if we have to start with individual states, then so be it!

people say that we need to keep the population down with animals because they walk around hungry and homeless, and i understand that. Some people are also homeless and poor so we also need to keep the human poulation down. Animals are just as equal as humans and an animal isn't stupid. Some say be responsible fix your pet well have you ever thought of this BE RESPONSIBLE KEEP YOUR PET ON A LEASH OR DON'T LET IT GET PREGNANT IF YOU DON'T WANT BABIES!!!!!!!!

I think fixing your pet is wrong i know we need to keep the population down but that means your going to go around fixing humans to keep the population down?!
If your responsible you'll keep your pet on a leash and not let it wander if you don't want it to get pregnent!

Lisa, I agree with you on the felines. I don't mean to sound partial to canines, merely thats my area of breeding. But it all tends to lean towards breeders in general and the over population in general.
Lisa Comment by Lisa on February 3, 2009 at 9:18pm
Most of the comments I see here are in regards to canines but what about the overwhelming over population of felines??? The common feline/kitten that far out numbers a canine in most of our backyards....the future "feral" feline that is allowed to breed in higher numbers than any canine.....

I completely agree with you Jeffrey Brown, about legit breeders are not the problem. The problem is all the backyard breeders, the oops, my dogs got in together-ers, and the I'm breeding my dogs at 8 litters a bitch since they are my money makers. Unfortunately something has to be done, and taxing a breeding license will discourage people from keeping their animals intact who are not true breeders or hobbyists or breed fanatics. It's not fair to those who are being responsible, yes, but it helps for example when someone's dog ends up at animal regulations for whatever reason and then they have to pay a fine for having an unregistered unsterilized animal. I work dog rescue, and it really is an unfortunate fact on how many puppies and kittens end up in the system (we have 27 puppies right now, and which will push us up to between 70-80 dogs).

I have read the above several times now. Just to make sure I understand it. You are suggesting that breeders ( professional-not back yard), or those who already are responsible should pay a "large" fee and be monitored? How about this instead, anyone who owns a dog must have it micro chipped, provide a micro chip id number in order to buy a limited amount of food for that pet. Oh,,and let them pay a large pet ownership fee for owning a non akc registered pet. That would limit your back yard breeders because they couldnt get food to feed them without providing a chip certified number. I believe you are serious and well meaning and correct in your desination, but lack foot work on where the problem is. I keep hearing about "breeders" . Breeders dont pass out pups. Our dogs have three different tracking devices. It's standard owners who breed for a buck or stupidty who overwhelm the system. I sense that most if not all of your info and satistics are handed down by others, not from your own work. Locate ( geographical)where the majority of strays are picked up. Breed types, and income of neighborhoods. The reason being, that will eliminate "professional breeders" as being the problem and footing the bill for those who are. It's kind of like welfare--raising my taxes to build more sub housing.

I've read a lot about what should be done and not done. I find that most of what is recommended and suggested is that persons only right answer, there is no other. Most of the strays that are brought in daily are not from professional breeders, akc registered or champion blood line dogs. They are mixed breeds, from middle class owners who have no sense of responsiblitly in owning a pet. To pass all they laws will not reduce dog fighting and crime in our streets. Thats like passing gun laws. Gang violence and child molesting, armed robbery cases have not greatly reduced in numbers. Passing auot nutering laws will assist in the average dog owners conrtol of breeding if they get the dog from the pound. Who it will hurt are those who breed for responsible ownership, showmanship, and training, because they are the ones who file for a license, take their dogs in for regular checks, and professional training, so they are easily tracked. Back yard breeders and and the couple next door who don't know jack about breeding is the ones who produce all the rift in the shelters, never had a license, doesnt pay taxes on the money, and no one of importance even knows they had a litter of dogs. To prove the point, most pro breeders, micro chip their dogs, call and find out how many were brought into the pound this week w micro chips. People who pay big money for pure bred, quailty bred dogs, don't toss them out. If they have, then it will be immeadiately traced back to the breeder thr the micro chip. Very rarely happens.

It costs a fortune to kill the endless quantity of homeless cats and dogs in pounds-a HUGE fortune. Please consider mandatory spay/neutering of cats and dogs for very good reasons; in Los Angeles, CA passed such a law and it can be modeled after them.

To give you an idea how fast dogs and cats multiply, one single female dog without a spay will produce 67,000 puppies born in just six years. One single female unspayed cat will produce 420,000 kittens in just seven years. Over 95% of them will die brutally–dog pounds that gas them, stab them in the heart with needles; die of neglect, abuse, torture, run over by cars, disease, trapped for snake food, sold to laboratories, etc. And it will cost the state (Counties collectively, which will affect State spending) MILLIONS a year to slaughter them in dog pounds every year.

A ROUGHLY EQUAL NUMBER BECOME ROAD KILL-RUN BY CARS OVER LOOKING FOR FOOD, A HOME, OR DELIRIOUS FROM ILLNESS-MANY TIMES TAKING *HOURS* TO DIE! This is NOT road kill.

It was a very sweet dog OR cat that died from human irresponsibility.

80% of dogs AND cats get hit by cars are not neutered–LOOKING FOR A MATE; or due to homelessness (puppies/kittens born to homeless animals).

(1) MANDATORY SPAY/NEUTER LAWS will combat dog fighting epidemic-dog fighters breed their own dogs prolifically for fighting purposes; dog fighting PATRONIZES street gangs, illegal weapons and narcotic exchanges.

(2) MANDATORY SPAY/NEUTER LAWS will save counties money which will make funds more available for law enforcement and public safety (dog pounds are horribly expensive).

Current law enforcement cuts makes society less safe, which encourages crime and it will become a State expense–trials are expensive, and so are jails and prisons.

(3) The people who oppose mandatory spay/neuter laws are backyard puppy mill breeders, and irresponsible individuals; AS WELL AS PEOPLE WHO BREED DOGS AND CATS TO FEED TO THEIR PET SNAKE behind closed doors! meanwhile countless THOUSANDS of dogs and cats go hungry, die of internal and external parasites, dehydration, run over cars, and DELIBERATE human cruelty. Once the dog or cat goes into heat, many people toss them out on the road and get another kitten or puppy.

NO EXAGGERATION-it is 100% true!! You would be surprised how many heartless people are out there.

(4) MANDATORY SPAYING/NEUTERING cures dog bite problems! NATIONAL DOG BITE PROBLEM-per the CDC almost all dogs that bite people are UNALTERED (NOT spay/neutered), so this will take care of another problem (per CDC 4.5 to 5 million in USA people get bitten by dogs a year; around 800,000 of those go to emergency rooms-2/3rds of all dog bite victims are children under 11. Roughly 25 people a year die from being mauled by a dog).

Thank you for your time and compassion for the Suffering

Please help me to spread the word that all types of lilies are extremely poisonous to cats. Your kitty will suffer severe kidney failure and die within 48 hours. Please spread the word and save a life. If you want to know more about this post go to helping animals. Its one of the posts.
