Oceana Action: Help save sea turtles
I just took action to help save sea turtles with Oceana. Did you know that there are turtle excluder devices that can prevent 97% of sea turtle injuries and deaths from fishing nets, but that the US government doesn't require them on all fishing fleets? An estimated 770 sea turtles are caught annually in Mid-Atlantic bottom trawl fisheries alone.
Join me and tell the National Marine Fisheries Service that we should protect sea turtles.

Oceana Action: Help Protect the Gulf Coast
I just took action to tell President Obama to protect the Gulf Coast from the expansion of offshore drilling. An agreement last year with the oil companies protected this region, but now they want to drill it all. Please tell President Obama that our coastlines are important to you and that we should be saving them for future generations.

Earthjustice ACTION: Protect Glacier National Park
Pure water and pristine wilderness make Glacier National Park
and its sister park in Canada, Waterton Lakes National Park, a
unique place worthy of its designation as Waterton-Glacier
International Peace Park, a UN World Heritage site and Biosphere
Reserve. Grizzlies, wolves, wolverines, lynx and many threatened
species depend on its pristine habitats. However, the park and
its wildlife are threatened by mining and gas drilling in the
Flathead River Valley adjacent to the park.
Our leaders need to know how YOU feel about this special place.
This month the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations
will meet in Spain to rule on a petition submitted by 11 leading
environmental groups in the U.S. and Canada. The petition urges
the committee to add Waterton-Glacier to the list of World
Heritage sites "In Danger."
One proposal under consideration by British Columbia's
government is for an open pit coal mine less than 25 miles
upstream from the park. More than 325 million tons of waste rock
would be dumped into a tributary of the Flathead River that
forms the western border of the park and provides critical
habitat for threatened bull trout and genetically pure westslope
cutthroat trout. Any leakage from the waste dumps would send
toxic sludge into Waterton-Glacier within 24 hours.
Other mineral exploration is underway even closer to the park
boundary. Proposed mining and drilling in the Canadian Flathead
Valley would push threatened species closer to extinction by
disrupting the seasonal migration of trout, eagles, falcons,
moose and elk, and the dispersal of wide-ranging carnivores.
Take action: Tell decision-makers in Canada and the United
States that mining and gas drilling do not belong upstream of
Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park in the Flathead River
Valley.

HSUS International Action: Tell NOAA to make a stronger commitment to whale protection!
I just took action online to ask the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to make a stronger commitment
to whale protection at this year's meeting of the International
Whaling Commission (IWC).
The United States' policies against whaling have been weakening
for more than a decade and we need NOAA to once again take a
leadership role in putting whale protection, not whale hunting,
back at the top of the agenda. With numerous IWC member
countries fighting for the return of commercial whaling, the
U.S. needs to be stronger than ever.
Many whale species were almost driven to extinction by
commercial whaling in past centuries. Though some stocks have
rebounded due to the IWC ban on commercial whaling, they still
face the threats of global warming, pollution, and ship strikes.
Allowing any sort of commercial whaling to continue puts many
whale species back on the road to extinction. This is why we
need NOAA to consider the whales this year at IWC and show the
world that Americans want to protect, not kill whales.
Please tell NOAA's Administrator, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, to commit
to stronger protection for whales at the IWC meeting this year!

HSUS International Action Part 2: Help pass the International Whale Conservation and Protection Act!
I just took action online to tell my U.S. Representative to
support the International Whale Conservation and Protection Act
of 2009 (H.R. 2455).
The bill, which was introduced into the House by Congressman Eni
Faleomavaega (D-American Samoa), is designed to promote
international whale conservation, protection, and research.
Whales have been commercially hunted, with some species almost
driven to extinction, for hundreds of years. With the numerous
other threats they face, it is imperative that the United States
step up to the plate to motivate the world to protect whales,
not kill them.
We must tell our Representatives to help protect whales and
support or cosponsor this much-needed bill!
It will only take a minute. Here is the link:

League of Conservation Voters Action: Ask Your Senators to support the CleanWater Restoration Act
This legislation is critical because recent Supreme Court rulings have narrowed the scope of protections of the Clean Water Act, putting the drinking water of more than 110 million Americans in jeopardy!
However, the Senate has an opportunity to restore these protections.
Click the link below to send your Senator a strong message that you demand clean water.

Wilderness Society Action: Protect Montana's Glacier National Park from Canadian strip-mining pollution
Later this month the World Heritage Committee of the United
Nations will meet in Spain to decide if a proposed Canadian
strip-mine in the headwaters of Montana's Glacier National Park
places the Park "In Danger."
Glacier National Park comprises the U.S. portion of
Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the world's first
Peace Park, created in 1932 as a symbol of the peace and
friendship between Canada and the United States.
Both Glacier and its Canadian cousin, Waterton Lakes National
Park, provide critical habitat for the Peace Park's largest and
most sensitive species that make the area one of only two fully
intact ecosystems left in the Lower 48. But one area around the
Peace Park particularly rich in wildlife is unprotected on the
Canadian side.
Specifically, the proposed strip-mine would dump over 325
million tons of waste rock into a tributary of the Flathead
River.
The Flathead River Valley forms the western boundary of Glacier
National Park and its rich wide open lands and pristine waters
provide habitat for grizzlies, wolves, lynx, wolverines,
threatened bull trout and genetically-pure westslope cutthroat
trout. But the strip-mine proposal threatens to turn this
biological heart of the Peace Park into an industrial
playground.
Any leakage of waste could send toxic sludge into Glacier
National Park within 24 hours.
Canadian and U.S. officials need to hear from you before the
World Heritage Committee meeting in Spain later this month.
Please tell them this threat to Glacier National Park and the
Flathead Valley is unacceptable and that the Flathead River
Valley needs to be permanently protected.
Take action to save this special park now.

Sierra Club Action: Take action to stop mountaintop removal coal mining
Mountaintop removal coal mining has destroyed close to 2,000 miles of Appalachian streams by filling them with mining waste. That's equal to 85% of the length of the Mississippi River. Our fellow Americans who live near these mines suffer from polluted drinking water, flooding, a decimated landscape and ground-shaking blasting.
Today, on the same day the White House announced new policies governing mountaintop removal mining1, I'm proud to help launch the Sierra Club's "What's at Stake" website, a place where you can track mountaintop removal coal mining permits and monitor the destruction they would cause.
The bulldozers are already rolling. President Obama's announcement today is a good step, but it will not stop mountaintop removal. It is now up to President Obama's administration to end this catastrophic practice.
Check out the Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining Permit Tracker and urge the Obama Administration to take bold action to end mountaintop removal coal mining before it is too late:

Wilderness Society Action: Global Warming Action
It's past time for action on global warming. The U.S. House of
Representatives will soon vote on major legislation that will
begin to address global warming. Passage of this bill is
critically important, but not assured. I just took action,
urging my Representative to vote for the bill. You can too.

NRDC Action: Tell your representative to vote Yes for the American Clean Energy and Security Act
The House of Representatives will soon vote on a bill that would set the nation's first limits on global warming pollution, send Americans back to work building a clean energy economy and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Urge your representative to support, strengthen and vote Yes for the American Clean Energy and Security Act.
