The Wilderness Society Action Alert & Earthjustice Action Alert: Jan 26

The Wilderness Society Action Alert: Tell Your Representative to Support the Omnibus Public Land Management Act

Long-awaited and historic Wilderness legislation is on the verge of an important vote in Congress. But the vote may be close.
On Jan. 15, the Senate passed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act that will designate over two million acres of wilderness in nine states, create a new 26 million acre National Landscape Conservation System, protect over a thousand miles of free-flowing rivers, and establish four new national conservation areas.
Now the measure heads to the House of Representatives where we are expecting a vote within weeks.
The vote could be very close. And, if the House makes any changes to the legislation, the bill would be sent back to the Senate where it could again be stalled by a lengthy filibuster.

Urge your Representative to support the Omnibus Public Land Management Act without amendment, sending this landmark legislation to President Obama for his signature.

Earthjustice Action Alert: Protect America's Rainforest -- Alaska's Tongass National Forest

The 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule was the result of years of deliberation and enjoys overwhelming public support, including over 4 million public comments from across the country supporting the protection of these wild forests.
Despite this support, early in its tenure the Bush administration excluded Alaska's Tongass rainforest from roadless protections. The Tongass is our nation's largest national forest and the largest remaining old-growth temperate rainforest in the world.

Tell USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack to end the Bush administration's exemption of the Tongass from the roadless rule:

The Wilderness Society Action Alert: Keep America Wild!

As the Obama Administration takes the reins, one new direction it can take is toward more protection of America's last remaining wild places in our national forests, parks and
wildlife refuges.
You can get started right now by clicking on the link below and sending President Obama a message to protect wilderness. Now that we have an Administration that is listening, it's time to speak up!

Defenders of Wildlife Action Alert: Help Ensure a Lasting Future for Wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies

Did you hear about how the Bush/Cheney Administration tried to eliminate Endangered Species Act Protections for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies?
More than 100 wolves had been killed in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana before Defenders of Wildlife and other conservation groups prevailed in court and secured a temporary reprieve for these amazing animals.
Now President Obama has suspended the outgoing Bush/Cheney Administration's latest plan to remove the region's wolves from the list of federally protected threatened and endangered species.
I just sent a message to encourage federal officials to adopt a more balanced and responsible wolf management plan this time around. And I hope you will, too.

It's easy to help. Just send your message online at:

https://secure.defenders.org/site/Advocacy?s_oo=PN26fPdHM37FNgXmwYzoYw..&id=1303

Wolves are an important part of Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies. Together we can ensure a lasting future for these amazing animals.
Thanks for helping.

Oceana Action Alert: tell President-elect Obama to keep the oceans on his agenda

It was a thrill to watch Barack Obama's historic campaign and election, but now it's time to get down to business. Along with a heap of other challenges, President-elect Obama faces oceans in crisis from overfishing, climate change, mercury contamination, and more.
In the past, President-elect Obama has been a friend of the oceans. As an Illinois Senator, he was the sponsor of a bill to require chlorine factories to switch to mercury-free technology, which saved our waterways and seafood from harmful mercury contamination.

Help us get the ball rolling with our new leader by telling him to keep the oceans on his agenda.

Environmental Defense Fund Action Alert: Help Pass a Climate Bill in 2009

President Obama says that our environmental and economic renewal "starts with a cap and trade" system to deal with global warming.
But he needs the support of Congress to achieve this historic goal this year.

Take action to deliver this message to your members of Congress.

b>Earthjustice Action Alert: Join with us in asking President Obama to set the right tone by taking five important steps in his first 100 days:

During his last 100 days in office, Bush saddled the nation with a slew of harmful environmental decisions, capping eight years of industry favors, politicized science, and wrongheaded environmental policies. Our legal challenges to Bush's eleventh-hour erosions provide the new Obama administration with great opportunities to make its first 100 days distinctly different.
So let's help Obama get started. Because the interests Bush served didn't leave with him, the Obama administration will face a number of obstacles as they work to make the changes we need. We're working hard to steer Obama in the right direction, but he needs to hear from you too.
Join with us in asking President Obama to set the right tone by taking five important steps in his first 100 days, including immediately:
1. Cutting short the Bush administration's second attempt to prematurely remove federal protections for the northern Rockies' gray wolves
2. Reversing the eleventh-hour changes that make it easier for coal mining companies to bury pristine streams with mountaintop removal rubble
3. Restoring the Endangered Species Act requirement that independent wildlife scientists are consulted to ensure federal projects don't jeopardize wildlife at risk
4. Protecting fragile public lands in the West from oil & gas drilling
5. Abandoning eleventh-hour approval of dirty coal-fired power plants on public lands

Take action today! Tell President Obama to take these important first steps during his first 100 days in office.

NRDC Victory!! Court blocks sale of Redrock wilderness!

It's Inauguration Day and all of us are focused on the historic proceedings in Washington. But I wanted to share a fantastic piece of environmental news because I know it will lift your spirits even more.
On Saturday night, a federal judge ruled in our favor and blocked the Bush Administration from proceeding with the lease sale of 110,000 acres of Utah's Redrock wilderness to oil and gas companies.
This is a huge victory for our nation's legacy of public lands -- and a final rebuke to the Bush Administration as it slinks out of town.
As you know, Bush's Bureau of Land Management auctioned off our Redrock wildlands on December 19, and was determined to close those transactions before the Obama Administration could take office.
But thanks to your outpouring of financial support, NRDC and our environmental partners raced to federal court and asked for a temporary restraining order.
This weekend, Judge Ricardo M. Urbina granted that restraining order, saying that "the development of energy resources...is far outweighed by the public interest in avoiding irreparable damage to public lands and the environment."
The case will be heard later in 2009. Until that time, the government is prohibited from cashing the checks that industry issued for the contested wilderness.
Of course, we're hoping that President Obama's Interior Department will act quickly to reverse Bush's attempted giveaway of our natural heritage.
Indeed, this terrific court victory, combined with President Obama's inauguration, should herald a new era in which America strives to secure a clean energy future without destroying our birthright of public lands.
On behalf of the entire Board and staff of NRDC, I want to thank you again for your online activism, for standing with us at the critical moment, and for making this historic victory possible.

Sincerely,
Robert Redford

Oceana Action Alert: Help Protect the Arctic from Industrial Fishing

Arctic habitats are gravely threatened by climate change. And due to sea ice loss, new waters are opening for potential passage by ships. But we mustn’t allow further degradation of the Arctic by industrial fishing. Now is our moment -- The North Pacific Fishery Management Council is currently accepting public comments on a plan to close the U.S. Arctic to industrial fishing. Please write in today to prevent the industrialization of one of the world’s most vital regions.

Sierra Club Action Alert: Protect Two Million Acres of Wilderness

Protect Two Million Acres of Wilderness: The Senate will soon vote on a Public Land protection bill (S.22), which will permanently protect more than two million acres of wilderness, 1,000 miles of Wild and Scenic rivers, and establish the 26-million-acre National Landscape Conservation System.

Sierra Club Action Alert: Help Rescind Bush's Midnight Rulings

Before leaving office, President Bush gave a number of last minute presents to his friends in the oil, mining and timber industries. In addition - just five days before leaving office - the Administration removed the Gray Wolf from the Endangered Species List in the northern Rockies and Midwest .

Urge President-elect Obama to rescind this and the Bush Administration's other last minute anti-environmental rulings. We need your support right now to help make sure these rulings are never implemented.

Big Cat Rescue Action Alert: Free Tony! - update and vote:

Thank you for writing a letter in favor of rescuing Tony the Tiger from the Tiger Truck Stop. We have hired an attorney to represent Tony and Big Cat Rescue. He will use the strength of your letters and the law to persuade the Iberville Parish council to enforce their 1993 ban on wild animal displays.

There is a poll online that asks, "Should we keep Tony the tiger at the truck stop?" There is an astonishingly lopsided vote currently of 43 who say, "yes" and only 17 who say "no." I believe it is only because people who care about animals do not know the poll exists.

Please take a moment to go to this link and vote NO.

HSUS Action Alert: Urge Congress to Pass the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (action: to call your U.S. Representative)

This is very important to protect horses from slaughter! Please take a minute to make the call... its really easy to do!

Let's Make 2009 the Year of the Horse
Call your U.S. Representative Today!

The 111th Congress just began last week, and the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, H.R. 503, has already been introduced. With thousands of horses a month being shipped over the border to Mexico and Canada where they are shot and stabbed to death for their meat, we can’t waste any time. Like past legislation (the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act), the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503) will prohibit the sale and transport of horses for slaughter for human consumption, including horses being shipped over the border for slaughter.

We're off to an amazing start with this bill -- there were 61 co-sponsors already signed on to the bill the moment it was introduced! We need your help to ensure that your U.S. Representative is added to this list of co-sponsors.

TAKE ACTION:

First:
Click here to see if your U.S. Representative is already a co-sponsor of this legislation:

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:HR00503:@@@P

If they are not, please call to urge your Representative to co-sponsor H.R. 503, The Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, to end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption and prohibit their export for slaughter in other countries.

You can reach your Representative by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, or click here to look up your Representative and Capitol office phone number:

http://community.hsus.org/humane/leg-lookup/search.html

When you call, you will speak to a staff member who can pass your message along to your legislator. Please be polite and professional, and leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a constituent. You can say:

"Hello, my name is [your name] and I live in [your town]. As a constituent, I'm calling to urge Representative Titus to co-sponsor H.R. 503, the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, a bill that was just reintroduced to prevent horses from being cruelly slaughtered for human consumption. Thank you."

We're tracking the impact of your calls, so please let us know you called your Representative here:

https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2009_conyersburton_horses?rk=I1L8EwEqpspKW

Finally, please tell your friends and family to make the call, too.

Thank you for continuing to fight to protect horses from slaughter
