IDA Action: Stop Navy From Killing Whales And Dolphins Off California Coast

The U.S. Navy will soon conduct live-fire anti-submarine war-games off the coast of Mendocino and Humboldt Counties, California. This will result in the deaths of several million marine mammals including whales and dolphins.

IDA Action: Help Protect the Northern Spotted Owl

In the name of budget shortfalls and fiscal crisis, California is on the brink of allowing commercial In the name of budget shortfalls and fiscal crisis, California is on the brink of allowing commercial interests to hamstring California's endangered species protections.
A proposed amendment to the California Forest Practice Rules would eliminate the requirement for a state-employed biologist to oversee Timber Harvest Plans. Instead, the amended language would allow a "spotted owl expert" to assess the risks to spotted owls, but this "expert" need not be unbiased and could even work for the timber companies themselves!
IDA wants to stop this and you can help! Read the following letter, then add your comments and fill out the requested information. Your petition will be forwarded to the Bureau of Forestry before the May 5 comment deadline.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention needs to know that redefining the term "state-employed biologist" for a much less restrictive "spotted owl expert" is not acceptible and is in direct conflict with the department's mandate to protect endangered species

WSPA International Action: Please call on the Egyptian prime minister to stop the killing immediately and use humane options

A brutal operation is underway to kill hundreds of thousands of pigs in Egypt.
Graphic footage* of the mass cull backs up first hand accounts, showing pigs being hit with iron bars, kicked and burned alive with chemicals. The suffering is indescribable.
The Egyptian authorities initially claimed this is a precaution against swine flu. In fact, the relocation of pigs from densely populated areas of Cairo was decided on a year ago – swine flu has merely provided an excuse to cull the pigs rather than move them.
This unacceptably inhumane killing contradicts expert advice: the World Organisation for Animal Health has unequivocally informed all its member nations – including Egypt – that ‘the culling of pigs will not help to guard against public or animal health risks.’
Egypt has a choice and a responsibility
WSPA is able to advise the Egyptian government on humane handling and transportation methods to move urban pigs to more suitable environments. For ailing pigs, humane euthanasia options should be explored by the authorities.

Please call on the Egyptian prime minister to stop the killing immediately and use humane options.

WSPA International Action: Protect the whaling ban, protect whales!

On the 22 June 2009 over 80 governments will meet to decide the future of the world’s whales. More than 25 years after the global ban on commercial whaling was passed, these intelligent mammals are in danger once more.

The international commercial whaling ban is under threat, endangering the world’s whales. I have taken an online action to protect these intelligent animals from the suffering caused by whaling.

Please join me

I love a happy wildlife rescue story! Not all rescues end happily ever after, and even this rescue story that I'm about to post has a tragic note, because the mama bear was killed to poach the baby cubs. The poachers took the twins to an illegal bile farm in Vietman. But the Environmental Police raided the bile farm and rescued the itty bitty cubs. They are now in the custody and care of loving people at Animals Asia. I thought everybody here would like to read this story of rescue.

Late Breaking Earth Day News
Bear cubs rescued in Vietnam

Animals Asia's Vietnam bear sanctuary has two new residents: tiny twin Moon Bear cubs. Following a tip-off, the Environmental Police raided an old bile farm on Sunday, which used to have bears. They confiscated the cubs, and the cubs are now in the care of Animals Asia. The itty bitty babes -- Maggie and Damo -- received immediate veterinary care at Animals Asia and are reported to be in good health.

According to Animals Asia's bear manager, "Maggie is very shy and laps milk from her bowl, clearing up every last drop very quickly. Damo is very energetic and plays rough, and he won’t lap from a bowl, preferring to take his milk from a bottle.”

Successful rescue missions are the focal point of animal welfare work, but they aren't possible without donor support. It costs $9,000 a year for Animals Asia to medically treat a rescued bear and feed, rehabilitate and keep her in good health. The cubs need sponsors, like so many other rescued bears at the sanctuary. Please support UFP's Earth Day Bear Sponsorship drive and donate today. All donation sizes are vital to the continuation of rescuing moon bears from lives of unending torture and pain. Donations are tax deductible in Hong Kong, Australia, UK, Germany and USA. The online donation pages at UFP and Animals Asia are encrypted via the highest SSL server for your security. Learn more about other bear rescues at Ursa Freedom Project. And now for a real treat ... watch video footage of the rescued Moon Bear cubs.
