Networking-Any Takers?

I'm interested in starting up an informal network of people (worldwide) committed to any or all of the following issues:

*Getting free or low-cost spay/neuter services in their community
*Trap/Neuter/Vaccinate/Release for feral cats
*Barn cat placement (for ferals that are slightly tame but not friendly enough for placement as house pets)
*Temporary foster care programs as an alternative to sheltering (i.e. people that are temporarily displaced and want to keep their pets)
*Helping owners contend with behavior issues
*Helping rescuers who need to place animals but can't place them in a shelter because they're full
*Programs that strive to prevent hoarding
*Advocating responsible ownership, including programs that help with vaccines, vet care, food, or shelter for outdoor animals
*Programs that use shelter animals as some sort of outreach the the community (i.e. therapy animals, being placed with people in a battered womens' shelter, etc.)

Basically, I'm focusing on efforts that can be made to reduce the number of pets entering shelters and being euthanized.

Hopefully, if a group can share resources, more people will realize what types of help are in their community. :)

How MSN's "Could" Work...

I believe MSN's are both enforceable and practical, if written in ways that protect and promote the cause of true breed fanciers. Legitimate breeders are not the problem. Backyard breeders, puppy/kitten millers, and people who permit intact animals to roam freely are the problem. While it's often argued that neutering is a personal choice that government shouldn't infringe upon, irresponsible pet owners, their pets, and their intact offspring often end up being someone else's problem.

"No-Kill" Shelters: A Mixed Bag

At a first glance, it would seem that the answer is an unequivocal yes. After all, "no-kill" shelters either don't euthanize their animals at all, or only when the suffering is so great that it would be inhumane to leave the animal alive. There is a flip side to the coin, though, and I think all sides need to be considered carefully. "No-kills" are one part of the solution to the pet overpopulation problem, however, they aren't THE solution.

In recent years, I found out first-hand just how few… Continue

Some Ways That Communities Can Reduce Pet Euthanasia

According to some estimates, as many as 9 million animals might be euthanized in shelters each year. The animal welfare group, The American Humane Association, based on a study of 1,000 shelters in 1997, estimated that half of all dogs entering shelters and close to three quarters of cats are euthanized. There are various reasons why shelters euthanize , but euthanasia due to overcrowding could be a thing of the past if fewer animals entered shelters. Sadly, efforts to reduce the number of anima… Continue

Sheesh, Who's the Mean One Here?

I was recently asked by someone why my Weimaraner (rescued from the streets of suburban Houston) is neutered, saying that it was "mean" and implying he was no longer a real male. Said uninformed person has one family member whose dog and cats have litters all over the neighborhood, eventually ending up at the pound. Another member of this person's family is a backyard breeder who produces "designer" breeds. Both of his family members are probably contributing to some shelters' euthanasia rate, y… Continue

Belles I also free feed, only had an issue with one cat, whom we nicked Hoover, he would inhale any food possible then present it back. I agree cats are individuals as are dogs, some do fine with free feeding others do better with timed feedings.
