It really is such a wonderful experience. A few months ago, I came across this girl who was trying to rehome her rat, because she was willing to admit she didn't ever have time to give her the attention she needed. She said Maddi was just being ig...

Profile Information

Proud pet parent of:
Jake: Black-and-tan German shepherd mix, born in 2000.
Hansel: Black and white kitty: Born May 2006
Gretel: Tabby and white kitty: Hansel's sister, born May 2006.
Piccolo (Picci): Western painted turtle. Born May 16, 1999.
Sullivan: Leopard gecko. Born summer 2000.
Al and Fred: Bullheads. Born summer 2002.
Tima: Black gerbil. Born April 2007.
Mia: Cream gerbil. Born June 2008.
How we met:
Jake: He was being paraded around by the Brown County Humane Society at the annual Pet Expo (a local pet store) Halloween party back in 2001, with this big "adopt me" jacket on. He was so cute, I had to say hi. He then proceeded to nuzzle his head against my leg, and I was hooked. I adopted him a few days later, and he's been my big baby ever since.

Hansel and Gretel: My dad found them at about three weeks old in an abandoned volkswagon. They were the entirety that was left of their litter, and seemingly abandoned. So my dad took them home. I was visiting from college at the time, and helped to bottle feed them for a few weeks before having to leave again. My parents were going to rehome them, but six months later, I get a call asking me to take them, because my mom had grown so attached to them, and didn't want to give them to strangers, but was too allergic to keep them herself. So I said yes, reluctantly though, because of Jake. However, I soon fell in love, and so did Jake, and now the three of them live harmoniously in my little house. I even catch Jake sleeping on the bed with my kitties. I've never had indoor kitties before, and they have definitely taught me how much I was missing out on!

Piccolo: Back in May of 1999, my dad came home from work with this tiny baby turtle hatchling in a cup. Apparently there had been hundreds crossing the sidewalk at his work, and he picked one up and brought her home to me. I named her
Piccolo, because it mean "little" in Italian. She's now as big as a dessert plate at nine years old, and loves nothing more than eating. (Disclaimer: I do not recommend taking on the responsible of a hatchling turtle unless you really know what you're doing and are very diligent about her care. Like any baby animal, those first few months are a lot of work!)

Sullivan: I bought him from a woman who was using him to breed, but no longer had the resources to properly care for all her many pets. He was about four years old then, and not terribly well socialized. He didn't even have a name! He is so sweet now. He licks my fingers when I put them in his terrarium . He suffers a slight overbite, possibly from a calcium deficiency when he was young, which makes it hard for him to pick up food, so I hand feed him. He's smart, though, and never bites my hand. He knows the difference between a finger and a mealworm.

Al and Fred: I know bullheads are not your typical aquarium fish, but neither did I exactly go looking for them. They were in a batch of bait minnows I bought to feed to Picci, though in the end I couldn't bear the thought of feeding her living fish. (She really tears at her food.) So I bought frozen minnows instead, and stuck the rest, including the bullheads, into an aquarium. Minnows don't live long, so within the year, it was down to just those two bullheads. They continued to grow, so I decided since they were going to be around awhile, I bought them a bigger tank and named them Al and Fred. Fred is slightly larger, and has a rather severe underbite (born that way). That's how I tell them apart. They like to school right next to each other in their mess of fake plants that I gave them to hide in.
Tima: She's a rescue I adopted, who had a rough start to life.
Mia: I bought her as a companion to Mia.
Pet likes:
Jake: Jake loves his daily walks, lives for them really. He gives me the saddest puppy eyes if I am late on doing our walk. He also loves snoozing on the couch or my bed, chewing on his toys, or playing tug with a rope. He just plain loves being the center of attention, and will even do silly tricks to become just that!

Hansel: He loves being petted and cuddled, and he especially loves being slung over my shoulder first and then being petted and cuddled. He also loves his food, and his numerous naps, especially on my chair by the window, in the sun.

Gretel: Loves gentle petting and being curled up in my lap. She also loves her food, especially her wet food, and Hansel's food. She always tries to eat his food before hers, because he won't eat her food, so if she eats his first, she gets all the food. (That's why they get fed in different rooms.)

Picci: Food. She loves food. And anything that resembles food. Heck, even if it doesn't resemble food, she'll try to eat it. Styrofoam lily pads, rocks, her filter... I can't leave anything in her aquarium that she can ingest!

Sullivan: His favorite pastime is snoozing in the warm glow of his infrared lamp. He can do that all day.

Al and Fred: They like to hide, and they like to eat. They also like to stay near each other.

Tima and Mia: They both love to run on the wheel, dig tunnels through the bedding, and chew, chew, chew.
Pet dislikes:
Jake: He hates baths, or hoses, or squirt guns, or lakes, or anything else that could possibly get him wet. He also really doesn't like loud noises like thunder and gunshots.

Hansel: He's afraid of the outdoors, and especially cars. He hates wet food with a passion. He literally tries to bury it like his poo. When he was being weaned, he refused to eat the wet food mixed with formula. We tried for a week, but he would only drink straight formula. Finally, he was offered some dry food, and he gobbled that right up. Go figure.

Gretel: She doesn't like being held too long, or when she doesn't want to be held. She doesn't like strangers trying to pet her. (She needs to approach the stranger, not the other way around.)

Picci: Picci doesn't like being away from water too long. It makes her feel insecure.

Sullivan: He abhores cold drafts. He likes things nice and toasty warm.

Al and Fred: They don't like rapid movement outside of their aquarium.
Pet’s favorite spot:
Jake: My bed, or his bed, or the couch.

Hansel: My chair by the window, where it's sunny. He also like my bed and the couch, and on top of the fridge.

Gretel: She likes on top of the fridge most, and the couch.

Picci: Splashing around in her water.

Sullivan: Lounging near his hiding log, under his lamp.

Al and Fred: Hiding in the fake plants.
Pet’s favorite toy:
Jake: A rope when there's someone to play with, a cow bone if he has to entertain himself.

Hansel: Anything that moves too quickly, especially if it has feathers or fluff.

Gretel: Same as Hansel.

Picci, Sullivan, and Al and Fred don't play with toys.
Pet’s silliest habit:
Jake: He tries to get the kitties to play with him by dropping down his forequarters and sticking his butt in the air, but all they do in return is hop to the top of the fridge. He also likes to roll belly up and stick his legs in the air if he really wants something. Occasionally, he uses Hansel as a foot rest when they snooze together on the bed. (Hansel really doesn't mind.)

Hansel: Lays upside down on top of the fridge and stares at me with the strangest, blankest stare. He opens unlatched doors by headbutting them. I mentioned he likes shoulders, well, a silly habit of his is to leap from a high place onto my shoulder, then start purring and expect me to pet him. When it's not so silly is when he misses and instead rakes his claws down my back or side as he tries to get up anyway.

Gretel: She likes to stretch out when I get home from classes, belly up, which is her way of saying "Welcome back, now I give you the right to pet me."

Picci: She splashes around like mad in her aquarium if she wants food. The closer you get to her aquarium, the more violently she splashes. It almost looks like she's trying to climb the glass wall when she does that.

Sullivan: He likes to sleep with his legs splayed out to the side. It looks really uncomfortable, but apparently he enjoys it.

Al and Fred: Can't say that these two are all that silly.
Pet’s sweetest moments:
Jake: When I kneel to say hi to him, he gives me the gentlest little kiss on the chin. I also love the way he is always near me when I'm home.

Hansel: He randomly starts purring (loudly!), then crawls into my lap and cuddles in.

Gretel: She quietly sneaks into my lap and lays there until I ask her to move because my legs have fallen to sleep.

Picci: She's really cute, but not that sweet. I enjoy her beautiful red belly and yellow striped body through the safety of the glass. (Don't be too hard on her- She really means no one any harm, she just doesn't understand that a finger is not food.)

Sullivan: I love it when I give him my fingers, and he gives them a little lick.

Al and Fred: Again, fish are not that terribly sweet. Fun to watch, though.
I crack up when my pet:
Jake: He likes to plow the snow with his face in the winter, then he comes up and his face is coated in the stuff!

Hansel and Gretel: When the two of them play, I can't help but be amused. They fly all the place, take daring leaps, occasionally knock something over or run into a wall, flip around, and other general silliness.

Picci: She gets so engrossed with the idea of begging for food, that she often fails to see the food that she's flipping all over the place with the flailing of her feet.

Sullivan: He leads a fairly innocuous existence.

Al and Fred: Aren't terribly funny either.
My pet is unique because:
Jake: He is not only beautiful, but is so loyal and sweet, and very smart. He and I train together all the time, and he listens so well! On top of that, he is absolutely nondestructive in the house, and as non animal aggressive as they come. He even loves rabbits. All these qualities together make him quite the special dog.

Hansel: He is the most flamboyant, ostentatiously lubby-dubby cat that I have ever encountered. No subtlety here. If he wants a good cuddling, he will be purring very loudly and cuddling into me before I pet the first stroke.

Gretel: She pretend that she's indifferent to me, but I know better. It's in the simple way she sleeps in my lap, or the way she greets me when I get home. When I left her in the care of a friend while I was gone a few days, she actually refused to eat unless he sat with her! As if she was too sad to eat with me gone unless someone was there to console her. Silly kitty.

Piccolo: She has got to be the most dense turtle around, but I love her anyway. She is utterly beautiful and quite fun to watch. Maybe someday I'll be able to teach her that hands are not food.

Sullivan: He is such a sweet, mellow gecko. He has been pet by young kids, and even let me put a little cowboy hat on him once. He didn't mind at all. He just sat there contentedly and let me take pictures of him. I can scratch his head without him fussing, and as I mentioned before, he will return such a gesture with a little lick to my fingers. He is nothing like the nervous gecko that used to bite my hands when I first got him!

Al and Fred: I suppose just the fact they are bullheads, and they are pets, makes them unique.

Fatty Tumors

My dog Jake, who is also my first dog ever, is eight years old now. Just last January, I noticed a lump starting to grow on the side of his ribcage. I was immediately concerned. A few days later, I had it biopsied at the vet. That's when she told me it was something called a fatty tumor. Apparently, they are completely harmless, as in, they never get cancerous. The only way that they become a concern is if they get so big that they start to get in the way. Only then would I have to worry about g… Continue
