My impression also is that the money does not seem to be there. I just read an article about LAUSD maybe having to cut almost a billion dollars. However, I know that several humane societies in Los Angeles (SPCALA & Pasadena SPCA) do have humane education departments. I think volunteering would be a good idea since even if it did not lead to employment, it would help many children & animals.
There is a specific reference to being kind to animals in the California Education Standards, and I know other states have some similar mandates. The main way to get it into the system though would be to integrate it into priority subjects like language arts and math (and I have seen lots of lesson plans for that).
I currently am a photo editor and graphic/web designer, but I have been a classroom instructor for LAUSD.
I think people would like to know more about the cute dog in the picture there (and any other "kids").
We just saw Jane Goodall's When Animals Talk and I highly recommend it-- fascinating and amazing.
I can post some humane education website links later.
Hi, Cari--
I saw your question about a Humane Education career in a discussion here. I have the same question, but it seems that no one really answered it concerning financial viability. I've seen the Humane Society program mentioned, as well as other courses including a Masters degree. But no one said if it was worth the investment from a income perspective. I have done a lot of searching and haven't found an answer yet. I am wondering if you have. I would be glad to exchange any information we have about a Humane Education career. Take care.
