Profile Information

Proud pet parent of:
Schmoo (black and white cat), Bean (grey and white longhaired cat), Cosmo (black & white shorthair cat), Panda (Cosmo's brother and black & white longhair cat), Jack (orange longhair cat). I am a volunteer cat captain at the ASPCA in Manhattan and we are currently fostering Bessie B.
How we met:
Schmoo was dropped out of a car in front of me at a Taco Bell in Louisiana - he was in a trash bag! We adopted Bean from North Shore Animal League. Cosmo and Panda were from my first foster litter for the ASPCA shelter in NYC. Jack was from my 3rd foster litter.
Pet likes:
Fresh water, balled-up paper, toilet paper rolls, CATNIP CATNIP CATNIP, warm snuggly places to sleep, sunny windows, and Mom or Dad's lap
Pet dislikes:
Noisy apartment maintenance workers, Mom making a buzzer noise when we're bad, and we really get annoyed when Mom & Dad won't play at 5am!

The Cat Lady of Baghdad: www.baghdadcatrescue.com

With all the horrible news about the Marine who killed a puppy on camera a few months back, I thought I'd share this lovely article about a British woman who rescues cats in Iraq.

BAGHDAD (April 29) - The mission was to get Simba al-Tikriti out of Iraq and to a new life in Britain.
First, a roadside bomb nearly wiped out the taxi heading to the border with Kuwait. The next step was to hide under t… Continue

Do Cats Belong Outside, Unsupervised?

I hear a lot of people on this forum say that it is "natural" and "instinctual" for their cats and dogs to roam freely outdoors. As this forum is dedicated to the PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS, I'd like to give my perspective on this, by telling my story as a volunteer for the ASPCA, and why I believe letting cats (or dogs) run unsupervised and alone outdoors in the name of "instinct" is so very wrong.

In 2006, I fostered 3 litters of kittens for the ASPCA. The first mother (6 months old) wa… Continue

Online Petitions: Real Action, or Feel-Good "Slacktivism"?

As an animal rights activist, I receive at least 3 requests in my email every day requesting my signature on e-petitions. Save the whales, the seals, bounties on stray cats in Iowa, stop BSL, you name it, I've gotten a request for my signature on it. And every one of these causes is indeed worthy of any animal lover's attention and should be acted upon immediately. But I believe signing a petition on the internet is basically worthless, other than making a person feel better, like they "did some… Continue

I agree with you, declawing your cat is really a bad thing to do but is mostly painful for the cat. I have two cats and one of them likes to scratch almost everything from furniture to curtains. My boyfriend told me to declaw her but I said "no way" It is like taking off a human fingers. So we agree on something else that was more humane for my kiddies "soft paws". Anyway thank u for telling everybody not to declaw their cat.

Hi Cynthia, there are two postings of people who have questions regarding fostering/rehoming cats. Could you check your old discussion regarding fostering cats with behavior problems?
Thanks.

Yes, truly amazing - it happens - dogs abandoned, helpless on the mean streets of our cities and dumped off on rural roads, left terrified, betrayed --they form bonds and when one is injured, killed - I have seen evidence - how they stay, despite ...
