Profile Information

Proud pet parent of:
Annie, my firstborn furbaby... A mysterious terrier mix with an enormous heart---
Bingo, a goofball of a mutt-cat who plays fetch (catchphrase: Umm, you gonna finish eating that?)---
Sugar, the regal and lovely lady of the Manor, a Korat who absurdly wound up at the Denver shelter. She keeps things civilized around here.
How we met:
I met all my critters quite on purpose by going to the animal shelter and following my heart! I've never had a pet that wasn't from a shelter.
Pet likes:
Annie: FOOD, morning tug, frequent naps and carrots.
Sugar: Sleep, brushing and dignity.
Bingo: the world is an amazing place! Everything is SO COOL! Like that cheese, for example... Are you gonna finish that?
Pet dislikes:
Annie: Loud noises, strangers and the short lead.
Sugar: Silliness of young cats, anything with bacon in it.
Bingo: Empty food dish... that's about it, really.
Pet’s favorite spot:
Annie loves the sofa, Bingo settles with whoever happens to be in the recliner and Sugar prefers to be above the noise and haste in the cat tower.
Pet’s favorite toy:
Annie LOVES her "Bo-bo", a blue plush weiner-dog thingy. Bingo drags my bathrobe tie all over the house, and Sugar is all about "Da Bird".
Pet’s silliest habit:
Has to be Bingo's way of absently smooching anyone who approaches him or picks him up.
Pet’s sweetest moments:
See above... :)

Oh... My... God

I really love the work I do. I love the dogs, the people, and that "light bulb" moment when Fido really GETS IT and starts sitting up or lying down or shaking hands. It's all just too much fun.

Until it's not.

An older man came in this morning for a private lesson with one of the other trainers. With him was a darling Chihuahua mix, who had anxiety problems and was extremely dog reactive.

He also brought a stick. Seriously, a stick. To discipline the dog for barking, apparently. And I was rem… Continue

A Tough Sell

Unfortunately, a good part of any trainer's job is to sell dog training. I see dogs all day, every day, with owners who are completely oblivious to the barking, leash-pulling and cringing of their pet. They fail to see the dog's behavior as a lack of confidence or direction and write off their dog (and sometimes an entire breed) as neurotic, barky or aggressive.

What our dogs want most from us is LEADERSHIP. When Fido barks unceasingly, it is NOT because he wants to be in charge. What he… Continue

DOG Complex

So, I've been around and worked with animals most of my life. I have a million books on dog training, and I've read them all. I survived the "dominance training" trend of a decade ago and have come back into the business of dog training... starting over, in a sense. My head is crammed full of dog-related stuff. Am I more educated than a lot of people about canine behavior? Sure, I guess so. Am I inherently BETTER than any of them? Of course not.

I'm often asked to look at the reasons people hav… Continue

The New Pup in the Pen

So I guess the first blog can be an introduction of sorts!

I'm Deborah, a single mom, animal lover and activist in the Denver area. I'm one of those amazingly lucky people who is doing what they love most for a living... training dogs and their people. Of course, it's been a long road of false starts and really awful jobs to get here! lol

I'm really interested in the problems people are experiencing with their pets, especially fear issues, since I work a lot with shelter dogs. So, I'll be blog… Continue

My foster mom, was talking about how nice your comments were, while I was under her chair. She reads them out loud. She had to check on the wash, so she doesn't know I know how to type. I enjoy baths with my hair blow dried, babies - lots of babies, playing catch, kids, and someday a real mom again that won't be needed in heaven so soon. I have three foster brothers that are permanent residence here. They are nice to me. Oh, (ears up) my foster moms coming gotta go.

By,
Love Lucy

P.S. remember I didn't type this :D

These round ups do very much good, yes it scares the horses and can stress them badly but many are saved from the harsh wild. and if we didnt thin out the wild horse population they would all starve in the end. there isn't enough wild land to suppor…

That isn't fair at all.... in my tiny town of 300 people they tried to make strict laws on how you must restrain a pit.. we own two.. the law said you must keep them on a 3 foot long chain, not a rope, when they were off your property (no leash law…

I wouldn't know from personal experience that she won't be but in my opinion very good socialization and as I would put it "extensive doggy training boot camp" at an early age will be the best to prevent any issues and at any sign of aggression corr…
