Rupert - 2 year old wire-haired Dachshund.
Ben the Cat - over 17 years old - died on November 14, 2008
Calvin - Chocolate Labrador - deceased.
Frank - Ben's brother/litter mate - deceased.
How we met:
Rupert - came from a breeder in Washington state, after some careful searching.
Ben came with his litter mate/brother, Frank, from the SPCA when they were just a couple of weeks old.
Calvin came via the Lab Rescue of Northern California.
Pet likes:
Rupert: Chewing on dog toys/treats - flailing his toys around.
Ben: Trying to chase the laser along the floor. Eating.
Pet dislikes:
Being left alone.
Pet’s favorite spot:
Rupert - his sleeping crate.
Ben - wherever he's comfortable, usually in front of a heat source.
Pet’s favorite toy:
Rupert likes his squeaky toys - a red dog and a monkey. His toys need to be replaced regularly because he tears the crap out of 'em.
Ben doesn't play with toys - he loves only human petting and affection.
Unfortunately, he drools when he purrs. Ewww...
Pet’s silliest habit:
Rupert barks at garbage cans, bicycles, mail boxes or any other inanimate object larger than he is. He also barks at other animals on television, epecially dogs!
Ben is extremely jealous of the attention given to Rupert and will butt in whether you like it or not.
Pet’s sweetest moments:
Sleeping in my arms, or in my partner's arms.
I crack up when my pet:
.....barks at dogs on television. Or when he barks while he has one of his toys in his mouth. When he chases his tail. When he shakes the living daylights out of his doggie toys.
And I like playing with the laser when Ben is around to chase it across the floor.
My pet is unique because:
Rupert has a great voice for a standard, a fearsome bark and an amazingly deep, deep growl that eminates from way down inside his chest.
Ben is always fun to watch. His brother Frank died 2 years ago, covered with tumors and in a great deal of pain. His death, as well as the death of our beloved Chocolate Labrador Retriever late in 2006, affected my partner and myself greatly!

Hi James, thanks for writing back. I don't check my messages too often on here either so don't worry about it. I was notified about your comment from my email address so that's why I decided to check it today. Thank you for your kind words and I am so sorry about your cat. Yes I do know what you're feeling, it's all too familiar. It's amazing the power of emotion that comes with losing such a pure love in your life. They touch a part of our hearts that very few humans can even get to don't they. I still miss Chance and think about her all the time. Her photo is on my locker at work :). I hope you can find peace in your heart with your loss and I'm sure, just judging by the animal lover you are that you will carry his love and share it with the rest of your family of furry people..haha. Thanks again for writing back James, I love knowing there are people out there that share just as much of their love with animals as they do people...if not more. :)
Hi James; sooooooooo sorry to hear about Ben; I know how u must feel; i too; lost 2 dogs this yr. I was a wreck for along time; just remember Ben will b waiting for u on Rainbow Bridge. I just rescued a long-hair doxie; she is 10yrs.old and her name is Baby-Doll. Take care my friend; Terri
Dear James, we are sorry to hear of your loss. But, happy to hear Ben had a wonderful life. Sounds like he was the cats meow. Be thankful you had him with you on this planet. For one day, I surely believe you will meet again. Remember a spirit is always around loved ones. They approach your shoulder when you say or think their names. He probably stopped eating on a reason we may never know. But, he's now in heaven and enjoying the company of many other angels. Celebrate his life and not his sad departure.
Hi there. I am kinda new here and am just now going thru some of the discussions. I came across one of your replies about putting down your dog and how you believe he hears you when you talk to him...I just put my Boxer down 2 weeks ago and am dying inside. I know your post is from last year sometime, but I just now stumbled across it and I wanted to say thank you! I talk to my "Chance" all the time telling her I love and miss her and how sorry I am, and just knowing someone else understands how wonderful it would be if they can truly hear us when we speak to them is very comforting...so thank you!
Over the holidays a friend was over at our house that has never met our Great Dane before. She kneeled down to pet him on is bed and he jumped up and bit her on the face. The injuries aren't terribly bad but it did draw blood.I can no longer keep my…
