Proud pet parent of:
Sofia: 1/2 Siberian Husky, 1/4 Norwegian Elkhound, 1/4 Coyote
Ole: Norwegian Elkhound
How we met:
Sofia is a pup from a VERY Oops litter. Her mama was a red & white Siberian with blue eyes, who was let loose in the Manzano Mts. in New Mexico while in heat.
Ole is a rescue dog brought home to Alaska from the Lower 48 at great expense and also a great adventure!
Pet likes:
Sofia: loves to run run run and hunt.
Ole: loves FOOD, and doing and learning tricks.
Pet dislikes:
Sofia: being mauled by children
Ole: being separate from me

Actually, neither like to be away from me but Sofia handles it better. They both go to work with me every day.
Pet’s favorite spot:
Wherever I am.
Pet’s favorite toy:
Sofia has a golden lion tamarin stuffed toy. She loves "monkey" toys, and she never unstuffs them.

Ole doesn't have a favorite, though he is slightly partial to a stuffed moose toy.
Pet’s silliest habit:
Ole is not just an elkhound, he's an ELKLOWN. He's just about the silliest dog I've ever seen.
My pet is unique because:
Sofia is a coydog, so she is a dog-not-a-dog. She's very beautiful, very special, and quite brilliant. Sometimes it's more that she's inconveniently smart....such as when she got out of a locked campershell in a mere ten minutes to follow a passing dog....(I was inside a restaurant eating lunch). She has a mind of her own but she wants to please me, too.

I do not recommend, nor condone, the breeding of coy or wolf dogs. I think it endangers the dog, the community and the wild gene pool. They are very difficult to deal with and you have to be extremely dedicated to train them properly. Some are never stable. I took Sofia and her twin sister, Athena, in from the oops litter that a tenant had, and helped find homes for the rest of the pups. Sofia and Athena were the only coydogs. The rest were obviously sired by a golden. I did not know she was a coydog when I got her.

Freezing Our Paws Off Up Here

It's been -40 for at least a week at my house. I've been out of the house about three times since before Christmas. I started my truck today to go into town because I'm out of dog food, and my transmission was so stiff I couldn't get it into neutral. I am going to get it going for sure tomorrow, as the forecast is for -25 to -40 for the HIGHS. Yes, you can make that Eeek face now...

The dogs are doing fine, as they get to eat moose meat while I'm out of dog food. Gosh, too bad, eh? ;-)

As for… Continue

Yikes! It's 50° Today!

That's the temperature at my house. Down in town it's a little cooler, but holy moly FIFTY FREAKING DEGREES! That's SOOOOO WARM!! Snow is dripping and melting like mad. The roads are wet, instead of icy, but they'll be icy again soon enough and extremely slick as soon as all this water freezes tonight. Won't that be fun----NOT.

The Iditarod mushers are having a terrible time with the heat. Just so you know, it's supposed to be 20 BELOW zero right now, not 50 ABOVE! This is not… Continue

Happy Weekend

I'm happy that it's finally the weekend. I am self-employed so I work like crazy for four days and have three-day weekends all the time. Meanwhile Miss Sofia relaxes in my bed.

Yes, I looked at all your racing photo's !! One of these days I want to make it up to alaska. I want to drive up, and to take the ferry up too. Both of my huskies are getting older now, one is 14 1/2, the other about 10. But they still love the snow, and all the attention they can get. My older one has cancer too, but she's a fighter and is in no pain (as far as I can tell) Have a great day, I better get back to work !!

Hi Robyn, nice to meet you!

Sofia is half husky, Ole is purebred Norwegian Elkhound, just so you know he's NOT a husky, though he is a Northern dog. :-)

If you go to my blog, you can see some racing photos.

Thanks, Daphne is a cutie. Adopting her was one of the best things I've ever done and despite the hair she sheds all over my house (which drives me crazy), I wouldn't give her up for the world. And I rather think she feels the same way :-).

Hi everyone, my baby's name is Bandit he is a chi-poo. There is a Rottweiler-mix about 5 houses down and is owned by an elderly person in a wheele chair. She cannot control her dog, he has attacked my dog twice now in MY yard. My dog is always tie...

That is what I feel also, when is the statement "everything that could be done, was done" accurate? There is no way to know in 5 months, that is what I fear. I too have had a similar story as Darrell's with dogs, a ferret and this year our precio...

100% agree. $30+/month for food and then you have toys, bed, scratching surfaces, immunizations, spaying/neutering, and then you have to figure in emergencies. I recently got a 'free' kitten and in the first week spent $250--luckily she was still ...

Yes I've read to do the "ouch" thing. I have tried it but it's really funny. He stops but looks at me really funny then tries to jump and lick me to make sure I'm ok, LOL. I will keep trying if he nips but you're right. Since he will be a big dog ...
