Profile Information

Proud pet parent of:
Luna, the supercat.
How we met:
she looked up at me with those big green eyes at the Camden County Animal Shelter... and I've been hooked ever since.
Pet likes:
she likes her blue ribbon, yummy food, treats, mousies!, and her wand... oh.. and me. and dad. and auntie sam and uncle matt.
Pet dislikes:
she does not like loud noises. and she prefers to be pet at eye level, rather than you reaching down. She is very 'size scared'.
after all, she was abused...
Pet’s favorite spot:
anywhere on me, haha. under the covers. mom's bed. sam's bed.
Pet’s favorite toy:
blue ribbon.
Pet’s silliest habit:
she's a boo-ghost. she'll follow you, but the minute you turn around she runs away - or freezes. It's like she's thinking "if I don't move... she wont see me...."
Pet’s sweetest moments:
sleeping.always.
or cuddling. she LOVES to cuddle!
I crack up when my pet:
gets rambunctious and falls off the bed.
My pet is unique because:
she was abused -- had an embedded collar that wrapped around her neck and under her arm -- had to wash the site with peroxide because it couldn't be stitiched and now she has orange fur... :)

A Cat Named Ugly (Fiction) *unknown author*

Everyone in the apartment complex I live in knew who Ugly was.
Ugly was the resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world: ighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love. The comibiation of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on Ugly.
To start with, he had only one eye and where the other should have been was a gaping hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot appeared to have been badly broken at one time and had healed at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was always turning the corner. His tail had long been lost, leaving only the smallest stub, which he would constantly jerk and twitch.
Ugly would have been a dark gray tabby, striped-type, except for the sores covering his head, neck, even his shoulders with thick yellowing scabs. Every time someone sa Ugly there was the same reaction: "That's one UGLY cat!"
All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hosed him down, squirted him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction. If you turned the hose on him, he would stand there, getting soaked until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would curl his lanky body around your feet in forgiveness. Whenever he spied children, he would come running, Meowing franktically and bump his head against their hands, begging for their love. If you ever picked him up, he would immediately begin suckling on your shirt, earrings, whatever he could find.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor's huskies. They did not respond hkindly, and Ugly was badly mauled. From my apartment I could hear his scaremed and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was laying, it was apparent Ugly's sad life was almost at an end.
Ugly lay in a wet circle, his back legs and lower back twisted grossly out of shape, a gaping tear in the white strip of fur that ran down his front. As I picked him up and tried to carry him home, I could hear him wheezing and gasping and could feel him struggling. It must be hurting him terribly, I thought. Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking sensation on my ear. Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying, was trying to suckle my ear.
I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped the palm of my hand with his head and then he turned his one golden eye towards me,a nd I could hear the distinct sound of purring. Even in the greatest pain, that ugly battle-scarred cat was asking only for a little affection, perhaps some compassion. At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try to get away from m, or struggle in any way. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.
Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards, thinking about how one scarred, deformed little stray could so alter my opinion about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love so totally and truly.
Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures or talk show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. He had been scarred on the outside, but I was scarred on the inside, and it was time for me to move on and learn to love truly and deeply. To give my total to those I cared for.
Many people want to be richer, more successful, well liked, beautiful, but for me - I will always try to be Ugly.

we are nuts

so --
our babies are doing well enough. the ringworm is still in 4 of them (2 weren't affected) and that's a pain. but their antibiotics will be out by the end of the week and hopefully we'll be rid of that nusiance (though 2 still are boogery, but not too bad).
All of them are eating and thriving... and growing (especially the biggest, Conaan -- he's huge!).
It's exhausting keeping things clean for the ringworm crew but we're doing it,a nd it's still a good time and it's good to know were helpi… Continue

One day at a time...

for those of you who are pulling for the little ones and my roomates, thanks a lot. I pulled the discussion because I figured I would try to update here as much as possible -- I had already begun to do that -- no sense in gunking up a group with stuff that's already on my page.

ok ok where to begin (you'll have to pardon me if I'm not making grammatical sense, or if I have a lot of typos -- as I'm operating on about 4 hours sleep today...)

So - the mom issue. The biting and bunny kicking issue… Continue

Prayers for Little Ones

The only two girls in the litter of kittens were fostering for Philadelphia PAWS have taken ill.

One has a severe eye infection. She's on eye drops now, and the pessimist in me, says she's going to lose at least one. She can't fight it off. We ungook her eyes open as much as possible, but one can only do so much. Luckily, she's also getting antibiotics from mom's milk - as mom is still on them for her URI. It's steadily going away though, and that makes me very happy. However, before it started… Continue

Babies!

So the babies are here!
I know I know, a little earlier than we expected - but the tent came very quickly in the mail and Sam was like "lets do it!" So yesterday morning we rushed down to Philadelphia PAWS - and picked up a litter of six babies and their mom. The babies are only 2 weeks old and so very tiny! Mom has a bit of a cold - she's sneezy and her left eye is a little weepy but she's on antibiotics and arithromyacin for her eyes. Only one of the kittens seems to have a problem with their… Continue

Hey Jennifer,
I haven't talked to you in a while, so I wanted to see how things were going in your life. Any babies at home right now? I'm going to try to upload a picture of Jake today and send it to you. HE'S SO BAD! But he's the most loveable cat that I've ever had. He comes up and he's me head butt's and kisses. And he LOVES potatoe chips. If you have one, you HAVE to share with him :-) Hope all is well with you and hope to hear from you soon. Take care

I was "googling" trying to find some information about on what to do with my new babies. I found a post on here and saw your reply. You know what you're talking about and I'd like to know if you can help me. My best friend and I just got two 2/3 month old kittens. They were born in a barn and were there when we got them. Kept with horses and what not. I know there's a risk for diseases and what not (although they seem to be in pretty good condition - we're taking them to a vet for a check up tomorrow). What I'm concerned about is that I'm pretty sure they were still nursing. They haven't drank any water or milk and haven't eaten any solid food or soft food. They also haven't pooped or peed. Any help would be great. Thank you!

Jennifer, your comments were interesting. I'm not sure about feeding raw chicken, owing to the bones, which can splinter. I understand the idea though, and I also understand that some cooking methods soften the bones so that they are not an issue. I have to say that, I just have an aversion to uncooked meat... it is hard for me to make the leap to a completely uncooked diet. I would still suggest that you consider a supplement such as Platinum performance to fill in the gaps: after all, chicken by itself can't be completely complete, right? The only problem with Platinum Performance is its short shelf life, only 6 mos, since no preservatives. Perhaps you can find someone to share the supply & cost with?

I just read your post to Linda W. Don't you just wish they would find an anti-viral for feline Herpes? What a nasty disease for kittens.
Mine had it very bad as a baby and still has issues with it as an adult. It causes his eye to flare up and get red and irritated. His nasal passages are most likely scarred for life and he sometimes has trouble breathing. It has made him more sensitive to smells, fragrances, and has even contributed to a mild version of hayfever. He gets 1/2 benedryl when the hayfever stuff starts.
I hope you get yours through this tough time. Especially the one with the eye trouble. Piccolo's major symptoms did not begin to alleviate until I had him fixed at 8 months old. I deliberately waited to neuter him until his head and jaws were well-developed to give his sinus' area as much room as possible. Vet recemmended this. As he grew into adulthood, the episodes became less frequent and less icky. L-lysine did not help much for me. Just ointment for the eye and benedryl for the sneezies if the discharge was watery.
I'm always scanning for any new developments in this area of treatment.
Tracy.
