I don't know if you can tell what kind of abuse for sure, but I'm sure it was physical. Dosha was a bit like that when I got her, and I know hers was physical. She has the scars to prove it. Just keep encouraging her. I praised Dosha for everything…

Frankly, living in San Francisco, I've never met a pit bull that didn't just come up to me, tail a-waggin', wanting desperately to get me to pet it. Socialized properly, just like any breed, these dogs make the sweetest companions.

- A 2 year old American Pitbull Terrier named Athena.
- How we met:
- She was running under a freeway on Harrison Street with just a collar and leash dangling behind her. She had no tags and was emaciated and so exhausted that she just sat down and leaned on me in the middle of traffic.
- Pet likes:
- She loves sleeping near me and cuddling. She enjoys playing fetch and having her little stomach rubbed.
- Pet dislikes:
- Other dogs and Beggin' Strips for some reason.
- Pet’s favorite spot:
- My lap.
- Pet’s favorite toy:
- Her tennis ball.
- Pet’s silliest habit:
- She likes to do a Superman off the couch sometimes. It usually ends in tragedy.
- Pet’s sweetest moments:
- When she's fast asleep on my bed and wakes up every time I shift positions to cuddle closer and remain in touching distance of me.
- I crack up when my pet:
- Calmly brings me containers of food (my food), sits them down in front of me and then looks at me like I'm supposed to open that for her to eat.
- My pet is unique because:
- She's incredibly sweet, loving and probably the best damn dog I've ever come in contact with.

I am absolutely amazed at how people that dedicate their lives to rescuing dogs can be so profoundly ignorant of them. I was walking Athena down Harrison today and was stopped by a mother and her daughter who told me that they rescued some sort of foo foo dog...I don't quite remember the name. They started petting my dog and telling me how she was so well behaved and calm. I told them, 'well, the breed is pretty people-friendly'. Boy. Did I get an earful. Let me quote them:

I'm tired.
Athena has been taking up most of the bed these days and I've been waking up every forty-five minutes to make sure she's still breathing. I'm exhausted!

Lani said… - The hearing was good...I wish I could say I was calm, collected, confidant, etc...but I did have a freak out and spaced half of what I wanted to say...but that only lasted a few moments. I eventually got most of what I wanted to address out there and even got a laugh out of the Senators at one point, and I know my photos melted some hearts, I think to see their "boogy man" as a pet and happy dog was a shock to most of them who have only heard the monster stories from the farm/cattle industry people who want them to believe that Wolf dogs are killing livestock not wolves...but it's whatever. In the end I thought I did ok, not great, but ok. After the hearing I went out and changed my shoes so I could walk around the capitol a bit, it was my first time there so I thought I'd see the sites, I bumped into one of the committee Senators in the parking lot who told me he really enjoyed my testimony and my pictures and even had to laugh at the thought of little ol me as alpha of my pack. We talked a bit about responsible dog ownership and some of what I had forgot to say...he then told me that he now wished he had never signed onto the bill. That right there made my whole trip worth it. I know next time will be easier!!
