I buried a little beagle along the four-lane highway last night. After the second day I drove by her, I put a shovel in the back of the truck. The funny thing about burying the poor thing beside a busy highway, is that with all the traffic, nobody r…

I too would consider this a ferral cat. Ask for the help to get him the medical attention. Some ferrals can become great "homebodies". My parents have one. He won't come near anyone but them but once he was neutered he begin coming inside more and a…

I have rescued both strays and rescues... I suppose in some shelters the cats/kittens are somewhat happy and taken care of while in others I am sure that they wish they were dead.... I don't think that one is more important than the other I guess w…

what would you do?

I posted this on the Dogsville group but have had only one reply so I thought I would ask the people here.
Friday night when my son was coming home the girl driving in front of him hit a dog. My son helped move the dying/deceased dog off of the road.
the next morning on my way to work I saw the poor thing lying beside the road and it broke my heart .
on the way home from work it was still there. and was still there last night.
I can't stand to see it laying there like noone cares about him. Isn'… Continue

cats I saved

Two years ago I worked for the local Humane Society.
They had a Cattery there and as usual it was packed full of unwanted cats. Well to make a long story shorter a couple cats got sick and they were tested for FIP (which is a disease not well known about and not very many vets or people are educated about) anyhow more and more cats were tested more than 70 cats were put to sleep simply because they tested positive for the Corona Virus (which cats that live in groups most likely have) VERY FEW OF… Continue

By the way, although true ferals are rarely domesticated, it DOES happen. I have one, Gaia, who sleeps in my bed. She lived alone in my spare room for more than a year. I left the door to her kennel open, and the room door open, but when I cleaned her litter box and fed her, she scrunched back as far as possible in the back of the kennel and hissed. She was so thin and unhealthy (with a litter), and weighed so little (less than four pounds), that she couldn't be spayed until she gained weight. During that year, I took care of her and pretended to ignore her. Gradually, she ventured out into the room. I put another litter box and feeding station in her room and she sometimes used it. My other cat would come to the door and they would "talk" a little. My office was next to her room, and one day she crept out of the room, peeked in the office, then ran back in. The peeks got longer, she started stepping in the room farther and farther, I kept "ignoring" her, and one day I felt her furry little body on my leg for a split second, then she darted off. She rubbed against my leg longer every day, and sometimes lay down just outside my door. She started purring and letting out a tiny little meow when she rubbed my leg. I started putting my hand down there so she rubbed it, too. Soon she rubbed my hand on purpose, and I turned it over and soon was stroking her. I moved my hand back in my lap, and she started reaching into the chair to be petted. Soon she was in my lap for a few seconds, then minutes, and before long, hours. Eventually, she would creep in the living room and sit in my lap while I watched T.V. One night I woke up and she was on my pillow, curled in a tiny ball! Now she always sleeps with me, but it took about two years. So, every once in a while a true feral will become tame . . . or let's put it this way . . . the feral will DECIDE that you are OK. It takes her a while to decide if other people are OK. If they don't push it or look her straight in the eye, she may eventually accept them and even sleep in their beds. Ignoring is key, for some reason. There is nothing like having a truly feral kitty decide to trust you. : )

Hi, Lynn.

Technically, a feral cat is completely wild, born in the wild, and has never had contact with humans, ever. However, the feral coalition will still probably help you with a stray that has had some contact with humans in the past that you are trying to help. I'm willing to bet they would. Good luck with your Louie! -Karen
