My dog, Sonnyboy, a 12 year old German Shep. Lab mix, was recently diagnosed with bone spurs and I was told that it is not surgically correctable.
He was pretty active for his age until May when I noticed that he started to slip…

- Proud pet parent of:
- 1 dog - Sonnyboy (German Shep/Lab Mix) and 4 cats - Pally, Matey, Blacky, and Happy
- How we met:
- Sonnyboy was about six weeks when I adopted him from the Willamette Valley Humane Society in Salem, Oregon. Pally is from a litter of many; his brothers and sisters were adopted the same day, but nobody looked interested in him, so I picked him; Pally was neglected and abandoned as a kitten, I got him about an year after I got Pally; Blacky was the size of a squirrel when she found us; Happy hung around my property and he will not leave - he will sleep day and night under some rose bushes; I posted some pictures of him at various locations, but nobody claimed him; on one rainy day I brought him inside the house and he never left home after that.
- Pet likes:
- Sonnyboy loves curry dishes; cats are picky eaters, they keep me guessing. One day they would like tuna and another day it is salmon; Matey and Blacky like to sleep on my lap. However, Matey always ends up winning his position on my lap. Pally likes to sit in the backyard and watch the traffic. Happy is plain happy to be inside the house.
- Pet dislikes:
- Sonnyboy does not like my petting other dogs; and the cats hate the neighbors dog.
- Pet’s favorite spot:
- Sonnyboy like sleeping next to me; Pally likes the foot of our bed; Matey and Happy love to sleep on my lap; Blacky being the female like to sleep in a basket on top of the scratching post.
- Pet’s favorite toy:
- Sonnyboy loves his teddy bear; cats don't have anything in particular.
- Pet’s silliest habit:
- On rainy days, Sonnyboy does not like to go very far to go potty, so usually I end up cleaning the driveway quite a bit; after we got Happy (though all our pets are fixed) likes to once in a while marks territory inside the house, so Pally and Blacky have picked up this habit. Matey likes to wiggle out of his harness and like to crawl into my neighbors basement
- Pet’s sweetest moments:
- Their birthdays
- I crack up when my pet:
- when they vie for their favorite spot on our bed.
- My pet is unique because:
- I don't know; I love them all.

Belles said… - Sebastian.. I posted this on your discussion.. I lived in Oregon 25 years and had horses and dogs... here's my recommendation for your dog:
Sebastian.. take him to OSU Vet Medicine Hospital. They are THE BEST!!! I've had alot of experience with them for both horses and dogs.. they are wonderful there and the cost is much better than regular vet hospitals. They have state-of-the-art everything!

- Thank you all for your feedback. Susan is right about how dogs are treated in other countries. Tiger grew up eating pretty much left over. It scares me when I see that my parents feed him chicken bones, fish bones, etc. It is a joy to watch him chew everything; my dog here in the US is like a vacuum cleaner, he sucks a steak like it is a grain of rice. Compared to the lives of the dogs in the streets in India, Tiger is a happy camper, he can sleep under a roof and is assured of his next meal though for us all is garbage for pick on Mondays.
I also heard from someone who works at a vet's office, that Tiger may be quarantied for several weeks. Tiger perhaps weighs about 45 lbs and so I do not believe airlines would allow him with the passengers. These are some of my fears:
1. Can a dog handle the 26-27 hour flight plus the layover isolation. At 36-45000 ft, it could freeze him. Tiger does not even like to be under a fan. He is not used to the cold weather. Tiger lives in Kerala, India, where it usually gets about 90 degrees and when it gets cold it is perhaps in the 50s.
2. The only time he sees the inside of a car is when I visit him. During my recent trip, I took him for a ride and I thought he will pass out; he was drooling so bad that two towels I bought got socking wet.
I am enquiring of any chartered flights that might take him.
I will post his picture soon. But in the meantime if you can spread the word around to see the best option, it will be extremely extremely helpful.

Call Air India or Delta (both fly to the US from India) to get info on having the dog shipped to you. You can also go online to check their international pet policy. I was a travel agent for many years and assisted in the transport of animals all over the world.
Most airlines require a certificate of health from a veterinarian, and proof of current rabies vaccination. If Tiger is small enough, he can go under the seat in front of you in a small carrier. If not, he will have to go in the baggage compartment. The airline will ask you to provide a bowl that can attach to the inside of the door of the dog crate, and a bag of dry dog food so that they can feed him at a stopover point. If he goes in baggage, his crate will need to have an absorbent material in the bottom in case he can't hold off on going to the bathroom.
If you'd like, you can meet Tiger and pick him up at the point of entry into the United States. (usually LAX, for India) That way, you can take him out of his crate, check on him, maybe even stay overnight at a dog-friendly hotel and then fly the rest of the way home. I see that you live in Oregon; Portland is only a 2 1/2 hour flight from LAX.
Whatever you decide, I applaud you for caring so much for Tiger. Not many would.

Please, please, please do this for him. Having an opportunity to directly help improve an animals life is so wonderful. I wish I had some helpful advice for you about airllines and flying, but I've only flown once--about 18 years ago, across this country. Please do this as soon as you can. No dog should be neglected. And please keep this group updated. Good luck. I'm glad there are people like you who want to help animals.

And know that, with good nutrition, 12 years is NOT old, just middle aged, and this dog will have many, many years with you.

- I just saw that tigger is 12 years old, thats old,so make sure the vet oks the trip. older dogs can suffer easier then younger dogs. Take advise from the vet on whats more dangerous for an older dog and how to transport an older dog and how to make tigger mor comfortable on the trip with his old age.

- Jessica is right. As far as airlines are concerned it depends on the dogs size. I dont know if this only applies to domestic flys or international as well. If the pet and its crate fit under your seat you are allowed to have your pet with you in the compartment in many airlines. Call around and see if thats internationally too and which airlines will allow this. If the dog and crate are too big for that they will have to go in shipping dept and because that area sometimes gets hot most airlines will not allow this during hot whether like in the hot summers. So choose your time when the whether is in a way where it would be ok for your dog to be in a car and not suffer. Just choose a time that is cooler.
As far as your parents are concerned you have to think of the culture but you are from India most likely so you probably are thinking of that. I dont know much about India but I do know in some cultures dogs are treated that way and its considered normal or even nice to feed the dog everyday and to have it on a leash esp inside when most would have it outside. But if its not a big deal with your parents and you live somewhere where dogs esp dogs of that breed whatever breed it is are allowed and you dont plan some major drastic life changes I think it is great that you are bringing the dog in a better enviroment.And ofcourse if the dog gets along with your pets. Find a friend who can help you and try to introduce the animals outside of your home so that dog wont be conceived as an intruder by your other dogs. I am not sure how to introduce a dog to cats. I was told to keep them in seperate rooms for a while but than that dog may wonder why the other dogs arent locked up but than again compared to being on a chain he or she may consider it a luxury.

When I leave Germany my dog will have to be shipped bc I dont trust anyone to care for him right. as far as I know american airlines and united are good ones. your pet needs to have a rabies shot that is 30 days old and a year young. He can be quarentined for about a day. Depending on his condition he can be given a seditive. Which would relax him. Also call the airlines or look up the info on the net. I did that.
