I have 3 cats, and just brought in an unwanted one into the hosuehold. I have been keeping the new one in a separate room. It's been a week now, but I am still seeing a lot of hissing, growling, batting, and screaming through the windows and doors.…
Loss of territory = loss of security, the most important thing a cat has. It can take a lot of time, you'll have to let this paly out as best you can. Most often, cats will accept the "intruder" after a period of time. Sometimes though, they never really get along totally, and just retreat to a safe zone, and the house gets divided up along those lines.
It's loss of territory, and there is no set timeframe for how long it takes. But the cats are terribly distressed, so don't push it. It has to happen on their own terms. They can accept the change, but nothing is more upsetting to a cat than loss of territory. Even if the change is for the good (a larger place), the cat would still be upset. Be patitient and do not force them... it will not work for a cat.
It's called "loss of territory," and represents a loss of security for one (any) of your cats- and it just takes time. Your cats will adjust, if you are patient. Try wiping a cloth over each of the cats, and leaving it by the door, so that they get used to and accept the new scent. At some point, switch them around: put the new cat in a carrier and let the other cats into "his room" that you have him segregated in, so that they can safely explore and learn the scent. The new cat learns their scent on the othe side. Just take it all gradually. Cats need to be introduced to new surroundings very slowly, one stage at a time... that is, one room, then extend it to two rooms, and so on.
