5:30am: Started the day as a hero! When the sound of the newspaper hitting the driveway roused me from my deep slumber -- the impact indicating the paper was much heavier than normal -- I realized that no one in the house was yet awake! I roused my master by licking him in the face. He appeared very angry with himself for having overslept, shouting and waving his arms. His ill temper even seemed directed at me a bit, which is silly since it is I who saved him from being fired. Funny thing though…

Both dogs should be at least two years of age. Younger than this could cause health problems for your female for several reasons. One very important one is the puppies will be taking calcium away from her at an age when she needs all the calcium for her own growth. Therefore, you dog could end up with arthritis, hip dysplasia, or some other calcium deficiency disease. Besides the suffering for the animal, this would take all the money you "made" on the litter for vet bills for your dog. This mea…

So you want a wolf-dog? Please answer "yes" or "no" to the following questions:
1. Do you have the proper facilities to contain the animal? (i.e. so that it will NEVER, EVER leave your property unattended. It's as easy as a puff of wind opening a not quite closed front door.)
2. Are you ready to accept the animal as it is, rather than an extension of your own ego? There is nothing "cool" about owning a wolf-dog. The responsibilities are too overwhelming.
3. Are you prepared to remain unruffle…

The wolf hybrid, or wolfdog as they are increasingly called, has become one of the most controversial canines in North America in recent years. Their increasing popularity as pets has led to an increase of animals that the general public is ill equipped to handle. Shelters are faced with animals that they cannot put up for adoption; veterinarians are faced with concerns over inoculations. Wildlife advocates fear that recovering wolf populations may be directly threatened by free ranging hybrids…

Here is something from the Siberian Husky Health foundation. It lets people know why we need to charge what we do for our puppies. These costs are from a few years ago but will give you all an idea.
BUYING A PUPPY? THINKING OF BREEDING A LITTER? PLEASE READ THIS FIRST!
The truth about breeding pure-bred dogs is that it costs more than most people think. The Siberian Husky Health Foundation has sketched out some of the actual costs of breeding a litter. This assumes you own the bitch and will pa…

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call.
As a shelter manager, I am
going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you
will.
First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the
"back" of an animal shelter for just one day.
Maybe if you saw the life drain
from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about
breeding and selling to people you don't even knowThat puppy you just sold will
most likely end up in my shelter when it's…

Re: House/Sentate Bill No. [or] Proposed orginance on
Dear :
I am writing to you about House/Senate Bill No. [or] the proposed ordinance on [specify details of ordinance]. I am strongly opposed to this [bill/ordinance] and ask that you vote against it. Passage of this bill will not address the root cause of the problem, and it will have a negative impact on responsible, law abiding dog owners while tho…

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon will be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds.
With no thought of the dog filling their head.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap.
Knew he was cold, but didn’t care about that.
When out on the lawn there arose such a chatter.
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the…

A Rescue Dog's Christmas Poem
Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full – we are lost, but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care,
They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!!
But now we sit here and think of the days..
we were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways,
Once we were little, then we grew and we grew
now we're no…

I love my little puppy; she makes my house a home.
She is my very sweetest little friend; I never feel alone.
She makes me smile; She makes me laugh; She fills my heart with love . . .
Did some person breed her, or did she fall from above?
I've never been a breeder, never seen life through their eyes;
I hold my little puppy and just sit and criticize.
I've never known their anguish; I've never felt their pain,
the caring of their charges, through snow or wind or rain.
I've never waited the who…

To be blunt, pets make the WORST presents. Pets should never be given as gifts – not to family members – not even to your children. Pets are not toys. Now, I could stop writing here but I want to build upon this. I want to explain just why pets make bad gifts and give other options for you as the gift-giver to consider.
The choice of a pet is personal. What I like in a pet the person who I would give a gift to may not. For example, in dogs I like hairy, active and often big. I like a dog that w…

The "Puppy Mill" often evokes horrific mental images of waste filled cages, dogs stacked like boxes at a warehouse, disease, and even death. But not all Puppy Mills are what we see in the media: some appear quite clean and even lovely. But puppy mills all have the same thing in common: the desire for PROFIT.
Profit is made in many ways.
1) Lessening of expenses. The less money you expend to create something, the more profit you have upon sale. Millers resort to many cost cutting measures such…

"The average pet owner that breeds their dog(s)."
So, why are back yard breeders a problem? Well, they just breed dogs for the sake of it. They may have a sweet pet they want to try and reproduce or they think that their dogs are quality because they have papers and/or are registered with some registry. They think maybe they can make a few dollars selling pups, etc. They just put out dogs without real consideration for the future of not only the breed but the puppies produced.…

Because of genetics, no dog regardless of breed or cross is safe from inherited health issues. A big myth that many less than ethical breeders of both purebreds and designer mutts will use is that their dogs are genetically free of all health issues. (Please for more on this topic, read reknowned canine geneticist Dr. George Padgett's article in Dog World from January of 1997 where he discusses the over 102 genetic issues that cross bred dogs can have). Hybrid vigor does NOT exists in the crossb…

Dogs are better than kids because they:
1.Eat less.
2.Don't ask for money all the time.
3.Are easier to train.
4.Normally come when called. (well some breeds anyway)
5.Never ask to drive the car, they don't wreck the car and they don't raise your automobile insurance rates.
6.Don't hang out with drug-using friends.
7.Don't smoke or drink.
8.Don't have to buy the latest fashions.
9.Don't want to wear your clothes.
10.Don't need a 'gazillion' dollars for college.
11.Don't mind a bit when you pass…

A stranger was seated next to a little girl on the airplane
when the stranger turned to her and said, 'Let's talk. I've
heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your
fellow passenger.'
The little girl, who had just opened her book, closed it
slowly and said to the stranger, 'What would you like to talk about?'
'Oh, I don't know,' said the stranger. 'How about nuclear power?' and he
smiles.
'OK,' she said. 'That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a
