Joseph Petcka after jury said it was at an impasse in slaying of pet cat (below).

They're cat-locked.

The jury in the brutal cat-killing trial of a bit-part actor said it was at an impasse, but the judge ordered the panel to keep talking.

Jurors, who had deliberated for 1-1/2 days, hit a dead end after asking for a legal definition of whether Joseph Petcka intended to kill his girlfriend's 7-pound tabby named Norman.

Petcka's defense lawyer called the note a sign that jurors were leaning toward acquittal because he argued that Petcka didn't mean to hurt his girlfriend's declawed, orange-and-white longhair.

"They're at the heart of the case," lawyer Charles Hochbaum proclaimed.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Daniel FitzGerald told the panel of seven men and five women that "it's much too early to end deliberations" on Petcka's fate. He ordered them to return today.

Responding to the jury's written questions, FitzGerald assured the panel that it "can use common sense and logic to deduce or infer [the] intent" of Petcka.

The former Mets minor-leaguer faces up to two years in prison if convicted.

Petcka, 37, said he kicked and smacked Norman after the cat "lunged" at him and knocked him down inside Lisa Altobelli's Tribeca apartment in March.

Norman died when blood from broken ribs, torn diaphragm and lacerated liver filled his chest cavity, making it impossible for him to breathe.

He crawled into a favorite hiding place to die.

A veterinarian said Norman suffered massive blows similar to those seen when a pet is run over by a car.

Joseph Petcka, defendant, beat his girlfriends cat to death in such a brutal way, that he broke the cats ribs, limbs, internal organs, split his tongue, and broke the cats palate. He ADMITS that he kicked the 10 YEAR OLD cat Norman to death with STEEL TOED biker boots. The top forensic veterinarian at the ASPCA was on the witness stand to state that he believes the injuries were consistant with the cat having had his HEAD & BODY REPEATEDLY SLAMMED AGAINST A COUNTER. Petcka is claiming "self defense" against the 7 lb DECLAWED cat, because NY law says the only way you can get away with Felony animal abuse is if you can prove you abused and/or killed the animal to preserve your own life. PETCKA IS 205 LBS, AND OVER 6 FT TALL.

We the undersigned, ask respectfully that Honarable Judge Daniel P. Fitzgerald sentence the defendant Joseph Petcka to maximum sentence allowed for animal abuse charges in New York State for brutally killing the innocent declawed 10 year old cat called Norman. As the animal abuse and child abuse are comparable evils, our civilized society needs to be educated about the animal rights as well as children's rights. This awareness can only be made possible when our elected officials understand their guidance and example is crucial by the policies and decisions they make. This case is not only a legal battle but also a moral and ethical battle. Is it OK to kill a defenseless creature, make a mockery of a system by getting away with it because it is just a cat? Or does the system will have the wisdom to decide that the defendant under all his polish is a sick individual who needs help so that he does not perpetuate this crime onto other defenseless creatures? We need your maximum sentence and your support to show to our communities that animal life is not disposable. Thank you very muchPawbawOn Behalf Of Helping Animals ASPCA Community

By the way, prior to this case, Petcka slammed his then-girlfriends hand in a heavy metal loft building door when she was trying to get away from his rage. He amputated some of her fingers when he slammed her hand in the door. He was arrested, and indicted on charges of harassment and assault. But even to this day, when tracked down by a reporter, the victim was too scared of Petcka to speak about the incident. He claimed it was "just an accident" but her Aunt, who DID speak to the reporter, said that her neice was terrified of him, and it was no "accident."

If the jury finds Petcka guilty (I HOPE AND PRAY THEY DO!!!), and if you would like to contact the judge in this case, to urge him to give Joseph Petcka (docket #02050-2007) the maximum sentence (only two years -- He deserves more), here is that info:
