HELP!! Local Park ALWAYS has injured geese!

I love visiting a park near my house, but it really disturbs me that every time I go there I find yet another goose with fishing line tied around its leg. Just today I saw at least 3. There is fishing line everywhere you look at this park, I try to clean it all up everytime I go but one person is not enough. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to help these poor geese. Last year I had to rustle up quit a few feathers before anything was done to save a goose from loosing its leg. I think that the city should make sure people don't leave fishing line everywhere; and help the birds that are already injured from it.

This is a serious issue, i work at a vet hospital and we have a few clients who are wildlife rehabilitators and they are true life savers. One woman takes in all types of geese and ducks and birds of all sizes gets them healthy and releases them into sanctuaries. They ones who can't survive on their own she keeps and feeds and gives them the medical attention they need. I would keep alerting the town and also see if there is a local group around who wouldnt mind getting a bunch of there volunteers to do a weekend cleanup of the park. Great work i wish there were more people liek you out there

Mr. Nnez (head of parks and recreation) has done a great job on making sure all of the geese that were injured got the help they needed. There is a meeting down at the park today; that I will be attending; for the community to discuss the needs of the park. I think there are actually alot of people out there who care as much as I do, hopefully we can find them all.

Awesome! You did a great job at being so persistent!

I'd call all the radio and TV stations to come down and cover this, too. It will make the Mayor and officials look great, and will educate even more people.

Hi, I live in Riverton, IL. We have a pond that's a wonderful home to families of geese.
Some stay year round. Others come back and forth. They are supposed to be protected, but we have some idiots that ride too fast and run them over. They get fined if caught. Today, when I was coming home from my boyfriend's house, I saw that one of the beautiful ducks had been hit by a car and was just left in the road for others to run over it. It made me sick.
The thing is that there are people living on two side of the pond that like to feed the ducks or geese. They've got them crossing the street, coming over to their homes to get fed.
This places the ducks and geese in a hazardous environment. They should have the food taken over to them, but I think the people think its cute to have them come to their homes to be fed. I've written something in our paper to try to stop this from happening again. Geez, I'll stop for a bird or squirrel in the road so I don't hit them.

That was a good idea to write the local paper. Can you write a follow up piece asking the town residents to "look after their own" by not feeding them on their private property? Explain in in such a way that the people will feel stupid and embarrassed if they get caught or seen doing it. I hate to say it but you need to appeal to their arrogance for their reputation if they are too ignorant to know better. Just my 2 cents :) Keep up the good work and don't give up- you can make a difference!

I'll try to contact the people that are doing the extra feeding. They might take it okay, but they may also want me to keep my nose out of it. I think they think they are being helpful to the animals, but it just puts them in harms way. I'd even like to get the city and residents of Riverton to build bigger "homes" for these birds - they've become so domesticated and I feel that they deserve some "extra" homebuilding help because they provide us with so much pleasure in being able to watch them. They are so beautiful and sweet creatures. I'll keep doing what I can. Thanks for your response. Its nice to hear there are other people like us out there that love animals and want the best for them.

Is there a local business that may sponsor a donation box at their store to start collecting $$ for a large bird home? Maybe a pet store, or a business where the owner brings their dog to work- a dog lover? All you would have to do is ask them and tell them you'd collect the money and keep track until you get enough to build a home. See if you have a local hardware store that is small enough to take interest and tell them you'll put a plaque on the bird house with their name on it if they help fund the house and build it. Just an idea- it will work though. check out this video http://youtube.com/watch?v=_pNNc182lEc
